i love to use my alien bees and vagabond on location. i'd like to put together a hot shoe flash kit as well for extreme portability. i've been very annoyed by the 580 and 430 power controls. i'd much rather have a slider that i could reach out and move. are there any hot shoe flashes that have an analog power slider similar to the alien bees? thanks for any help!

Not sure what you mean by a slider control, but the Vivitar 285HV has full manual control for 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/16th power.

Why annoyed with the 580? All it takes is a button press and a twist of the wheel...

I know the Quantum Flash units have a wireless controller that will give you full e-ttl II. As far as I know they a much better flash than the 580 and 430. Whats is it about the power controls that you don't like?

The Sunpak 383 has a slider control for power, but they are discrete power steps (full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16). They are on the back of the flash units so easier to get at that the Vivitar 285HV. The slider on the 383 is much smaller and not as easy to manipulate as the one on the Alien Bees.

The Sunpak 383 also has a rotating head (Vivitar 285HV does not) so you can always have the power slider in the most convenient location for adjuatment.

The Vivitar 285HV does have a zoom head (Sunpak 383 does not).

Both the 285HV and the 383 have the same flash power and about equal in power to the Canon 580EX.

Enjoy! Lon
