Yes a 550ex will master a 430ex but it has to be mounted on camera or using a off shoe connector.

Another option would be to look for a used novatron setup on ebay. I got the 440 for $400, 3 heads, 440WS, two umbrellas and light stands. I added a wein safe sync (cause I used to shoot nikon). I managed to find one that I could drive to and pickup. (these are HEAVY)


Novatron also still services the older units. If you wish to buy newer heads you will need an adaptor, but there seem to be plenty of older heads out there.

A local studio I do some work for here uses the same setup with a LOT of sucess.
