Macro on the G-series

Hi all :D

I love Canon and am currently using both the S45 and S50 (don't ask... 8) )... I love 'em except that the macro mode is fair to poor and I do not have the option of add-on lenses. Therefore, I am considering a camera from the Canon G series to use separately for macro shots and would like to ask the owners in this forum how they would rate the macro capabilities of their G1, G2, G3, or G5 without macro lenses. (Any sample images would also be appreciated.) Thanks in advance :!:

I haven't really taken a large number of macros, but was pleased with the camera's (a G2) performance when I did. I have since bought a Hoya +10 close up lens, but haven't really used it much. The two pictures I'm showing were taken without the aid of the close up lens. I think for a built in feature, it does a remarkable job.

  Wow!

Those are awesome -- better than anything the s45 or S50 can produce. Now I am seriously considering a G2 or G3 (not too happy with G5 reviews...) Thanks a lot for posting those... they are stunning :)

No problem. If you really want to see some stunning macro work, done with a G1, check out Don Ellis' Mantis World gallery. His shots are amazing. Here's the link:

Enjoy.

Thanks Bruce. Too bad about the brown leaf in the first shot. I didn't notice it until I got the image on the computer. Had I seen it at the time, I would have altered the composition, or cleared it away. Oh well, there's always next time. Maybe I'll find another some day :)

Wow... that is some awesome,,, pictures. I really like them. What camera do you have? And did you have any special lenses on it to do this.
I have the G3 and never could even get close to any thing like yours.

They are beautiful photos. You did a very good job on shooting them. Good work keep it up. Like to see more from you.

The G5 is not to pull away.
Here is a macro without close up lens, sure not beautiful like Don Ellis' Mantis's macros, but the not fault of the machine, but mine....

Gail,
Thank you. I shot those with a G2. No special lenses or filters. All of my images can be viewed by clicking the "Some stuff..." link in my signature. Other people seem to like my pictures more than I do ?!

I'll have a new camera soon, so hopefully my shots will improve. Thanks again.

Try S45/S50 adapter and macro lens

You could also consider S45/S50adapter and any macro lens. One simple macro lens makes the focusing very easy with every camera.

Check several samples here with infrared filter + macro lens:

Those are very nice photos :D As for the lens adapter, I just might try that... however I'm not sure how the power on/off mechanism will be affected and whether my S45 will get scratched. B+H doesn't seem to carry it in their store, so I can't see for myself

You didn't hear it from me, don't try this at home, it is an unsupported feature, but the G series is capable of focusing up to the end of the lens.

Check out this thread... http://www.photography-on-the.net …5228&highlight=uber+macro

This is a standard adapter and it was used from S30 users in this forum. According to the description it should not scratch the camera.

The best is shooting Macro at Iso50 in Raw using some adapter and a simple macro lens for easy focusing. Also have in mind necessary exposure compensation (+ or -) many times when shooting flowers.

Here are some other macros:
