Non-Canon Brand Lenses??

I am new to this forum as well as photography as a whole....I am trying to learn all of the details surrounding this hobby and have been looking into various lense options for my camera (Canon Powershot A630). I understand that there is a converter lense that is sold that can then be used with essentially any 58 mm lense (regardless of brand). Is this true?

I also came across this "package" on amazon, that based on the user responses sounds like a pretty good "starter" package. Being that this is made of metal rather than the true Canon converter made of plastic, I'm curious what other's thoughts are on this? Do you think it is any good?

It may be wiser to post this in the Compact digital forum, I'm not sure that they venture out into this forum often. I could be wrong though

They do, but as this is specialized, it belongs there anyhow.

I just purchased a .45x and a 2x convertor for my G6. I'm going to be traveling around Mexico and didn't want to lug a DSLR and a backpack full of lenses. I've been testing them and here's some things to consider:

1. Both work pretty well. The .45 has a lot of barrel distortion (which can be corrected in Photoshop). So far, I haven't seen any CA (purple fringing).
2. The adapter that I got has a lot of play in it, but it does work. The Canon adapter is a lot better.
3. The Canon adaptor is 58mm. Off brand ones come in 52 and 58mm. The off brand lenses come in both 52mm and 58mm depending on make. Make sure what you get matches.
4. If you get two lenses like I did, get two adapters. It makes changing the lenses a lot faster.
5. The adapter can also be used for mounting filters.

Thanks Gary!

Is the adapter you bought plastic or metal? That is my biggest concern with the canon brand one... several of the reviews note that the plastic does not make it a good fit for "heavier" telephoto or wide angle lenses. Thoughts?

Looks like this was moved to the compact forum, I'm assuming by the moderator? Thanks in advance!

Both of the adapters that I have are metal. I have an Opteka .45x and a Kenko 2X. convertor lens. Both are pretty heavy. Keep in mind that a good composite plastic is probably stronger than the thin metal adapters. Bottom line is that either will work. On my G3, I was worried because the bayonet mount is on the lens barrel (which is plastic). I didn't leave the lenses mounted because I was afraid that one knock on something could damage the lens assembly. On my G6, the mount is on the body. Completely different adapter.

If anyone in US is interested I have a Canon LA-DC58F converter that is new and glad to give away for the price of shipping. Here is what it is:

I bought it by mistake from OD online. They refunded my money because it did not fit my S3 but told me to just throw away the adapter. Sure hate to do that.

beeGjay-

That is exactly what I am looking for. How much would shipping be to 66203 (Shawnee, KS)?? I am definitely interested.

I don't know but I am in Oklahoma so customs should not come into play. I would have to take it to the post office to weigh it to see according to your zip. However, I have to think if you sent $5 all should be covered. If not I really don't care as I hate to throw it away.

Now, are you sure that that is the model for your camera. I don't want you stuck with it not fitting.

If the right model email me at bgj42@cox.net (external link) and we can make arrangements for the transfer.

Reread your previous post and you said you were not interested in the Canon plastic adapter which this is. It feels sturdy enough but surely can't test it for you.

When I owned my G6, I had a Raynox .66X wide converter. It gave excellent results without any distortion.
