Using 430ex as a fill in Flash

Ive been using my 430ex as a fill in flash while shooting in AV mode, all my pictures are blown out, or unblalanced. Can someone off any suggestions on how to use the flash for fill-in.

-2 FEC or thereabouts and proper exposure of the scene.

The first chapter of Flash Photography 101 explains the blowouts. Read Flash Fact #7 carefully.

Once you understand the issue, the solutions are thus:
1) Use Tv mode with a shutter speed of 1/250 or slower.
2) If you want wide apertures outdoors, use high speed sync on the flash.

-2 FEC really won't give you much flash, but you will need to do some testing and adjust EC and FEC to get the right balance.
