I organized a photo session on Sunday night in order to get something to enter in the Powershot weekly challenge before it ended a few hours later. Topic was water/rain drops. After a few frustrating tries with a spoon and a bowl, my eyes caught my CD drink coaster... hmmm I remembered seeing this concept around here before, so I thought I'd give this a try. Equipped with a water spray bottle (my cat was wondering why I was punishing that innocent CD  ), a LED flashlight and a tripod, I spent an hour experimenting.

Out of 80 pics, here are my bests:

#1 - The winner of the challenge.

IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5555.jpg

#2 - Digiral rain 1
IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5552-1.jpg

#3 - Marbles!
IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5556-1.jpg

#4 - Digital rain 2
IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5575.jpg

In the next ones, my computer monitor was the source of light.

#5 - YOu can see POTN in the middle drop. :)
IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5525.jpg

#6 - Ring of Saturn
IMAGE: http://www.jeece.net/photo/macrocd/IMG_5529.jpg

In #1 to 4, I used a long exposure and the LED flashlight to light paint. This produced a larger "rainbow" rather than just a straight line accross teh CD from a single fixed light source.

CC&Suggestions welcome of course!

I really like #1 and 6. Nice colors and everything seems to be sharp and in focus. Good DOF, I like 'em.

It was a very unique idea. You came up with some really nice compositions and great titles to go along with the images. Some of them look like they could use a bit of noise reduction.

I still like #1 the best, the weekly winner for the challenge. I also like #4 too, very nice range of colors and has a 3d feel to it.

I'm going to have to try this out in my spare time too, you inspired me.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Stefan A: Yeah, the noise... I don't have the habit of running a noise reducing plug-in... I don't even remember which one I have. Just because I struggled to get a nice result the first few times I used it, I kind of let it aside since then. :o

Hey, I did that a couple of weeks back. I like yours better though. I shot mine with an old 75-300 zoom and cropped the heck out of it. I need to get me a Macro lens.

Nice title for the experimental pictures. I'm sure each result is different, which is what i like about this kind of photography. What inspired you to try it?

I remembered seeing this a few times on the forum (Athena is the first I remember, though there are others), and I wanted some colors to complement my otherwise bland drops. I was a little embarassed at first because I didn't want to copy, or imply I was trying to do so. I added my touch and tried a few variations, so in the end my results were different enough and I was proud of my work.
