I may be the only one here fed up with this, but here goes.
There seems to be a flood of threads of people saying their lens is bad, it's soft/unsharp, it misses focus, etc etc, when the reason is clearly user fault.
I'm not saying bad lenses / copies don't exist, but there have been so many threads where the only person who can fix the problem is you.
I.E.
unsharp. You shot a photo at 1/15sec at 200mm.
It misses focus. You shot that at 1.4 and used the center focus point and then recomposed.

+1. Bad lenses exist, but I think they're in the extreme minority. The 10 or 11 EF and EF-S lenses I've owned and the 6 EF lenses my friend has are all perfectly sharp. It's possible that I'll eventually run across a bad one, but not likely.

Yes but it's understandable. To many people who are just starting in the dSLR world the money they have spent on their lens is a considerable amount of money, and they are just concerned that their purchase is not duff. I agree completely that 90%+ of the time it's just user error, but they need other people to reassure them that their kit is infact fine. And then these very threads worry other newcomers that they may have a dud.

I've got this uber-expensive 15mm lens that simply has horrible barrel distortion. No amount of fiddling will make the horizon lines and building walls stay straight. How can Canon put out such a crappy lens. Shame on them!

How about a STICKY thread to help people with new lenses get the best out of them

Along the lines of

Slightly soft focus results Try...............

I also agree that a lot of the errors are the user and being a new user I have not blamed my equipment before getting someone in the know so to speak to take a look, be it a friend or my friendly local camera shop.....

but this place is better than any other site in term of manner or bahavior of people.

look at the dpreview Canon forum or Pentax forum , how they'd usually react to Phil's review just got up isjust unbeleivable and rude plain rude.

I was shocked at the people there at Pentax forum of dp when Phil's review of the K10D was up.

Compare to that, this forum is very very nice and people here are all well mannered.

How dare you!!! It is never my fault. It is always the camera or the lens.

Of course :D.

Also, it's not always new members, sometimes these people have quite a few posts and might have been shooting for a while. It's funny, instantly you have IS and now you can expect tack-sharp photos at 200mm and 1/15sec.

*PS, forums would be no fun w/o whining.*

That was my point... new users should be allowed to post about their lenses if they have any concerns. I was saying their actions are completely understandable.

JaGWiRE,
Instead of letting there mess up go around as the lens is bad, jump in and help correct the problem, or confirm how good your lens is. :)
