Found this one while cleaning out and rearranging my garage this afternoon. Not something to be messed with, being one of the worlds most poisonous spiders (it's a member of the Black-Widow family of spiders).

Nice shots of a female Redback spider. Interestingly, for such a poisonous spider, not everyone who is bitten needs to be hospitalised, sometimes the effects of being bitten can take up to 2-3 days to show themselves (at least from what I've read about them). Guess what naturally hunts these spiders? Daddy long legs, yes!

Yeah I have heard that before regarding the hospitalisation. That's why I was careful to say one of the most poisonous, rather than say they were one of the most deadly. ;)

Nick: Yep, it was with the Sigma 150mm, and handheld. I could get better quality shots if I had bothered to set up the tripod, but I didn't want to run the risk of my subject getting away while I got it all sorted.

Lovely shots- certainly looks menacing- I'd guess egg laden judging by the size of that abdomen.

Nope. That's the normal size of the abdomen. If she was full of eggs the red strip would be stretched and broken up, not the solid stripe it is there.

Hiya Dale,

Great series of shots, I never had the pleasure of seeing one of these little beauts when I was out there but I did see plenty of other types though.

Cheers for now
Mark

Nice pics. Have to admit though that I'd be looking for the can of Raid if I ever saw one of those in person...;)

Did you remember to poke it and get it really mad? I heard you're supposed to do that for best effect.
