I bought a Vivitar 28-210 Canon AF Lens in a bundled buy on eBay with a few other lenses. The lens is clean and in good condition. When I mounted it on my XTi it worked great but drianed my battery within 5 minutes, twice. I'm assuming it's got a short somewhere in it's circuitry. I don't want to jepordize my XTi so I've put it away.

Does anyone know of a place that repairs or reconditions this type of lens? I searched Google for Vivitar lens repair and didn't get a good hit. I also don't know if it worth repairing or not. It is clean and the auto focus works well but.....

The repair depot is in your kitchen underneath your sink in that white glad bag. ;)

Seriously, the lens probably cost $100 brand new. The odds are that a repair would cost more then the lens is actually worth so usually they go into the garbage when they break. What other lenses did you get in your bundle buy?

Good choice on not using it on your XTi.

The bundle included a case, a 28-80 Canon EF, a 18-55 Canon EF, the Vivitar Lens and a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm Camera Body all for $80 shipped. I know they are all cheapo kit lenses but hard to resist.

Even with the bad Vivitar still not a bad deal, LOL  , the other lense work fine and are in good condition. I'm thinking of getting my 10 year old started, he likes taking Dad's camera and doing pictures.

I will take your advise and not use the Vivitar. I will probably take it apart with my son to show him how optics work with cameras then toss it, could be a good teaching tool.

Thanks for the help.

Rebel S - cool! Real pentaprism. I've got a silver Rebel Ti. Feed it some Fuji Reala or Kodak Ultracolor and have some fun.

Check out http://photonotes.org/manuals/eos-rebel-s-ii/ (external link) if you haven't seen it already

Please do not throw in into the trash can under your sink - it would wind up in a land fill. Donate it to Goodwill. Ought to be worth a $5. write off at tax time.

Will the vivitar lens work on the 35mm camera? If so, I'd just keep it for that to let your kid use.

The Vivitar should work on the 35mm but, at 6-12 bucks a pop, you don't want to have to replace the batteries in the Rebel S that often. There might be some rechargables floating around for it though.

Did you try it set to manual focus? Maybe the auto focus is what's draining the batteries.

That'd be my bet. I suppose its possible that something is binding and a good cleaning and lube by a camera shop might make let the auto-focus motor work easier. Then again, it could have been engineered that way (old tech) or the motor could be shot.

I gave the contacts a good cleaning, no change. I tried it on manual and it worked fine with no drain. The XTi is tough to manual focus, the prism isn't very conducive to manual focusing (to my old eyes, anyway). I tried it on the film camera and it was reacting the same as on my XTi in AF so I put it to manual to keep the battery from draining.

I went and bought some film today (thanks JackProton, a real blast from the past;) ) and will try out the Rebel S. The film loaded up and the camera set everything (ISO, etc,) like it should so I think it's in fine working order. I'll use the Vivitar in manual mode on it with my son to give him a lesson on film (and manual focusing, LOL).

Thanks everyone for your feedback, especially Gasrocks for reminding me to be a responsible citizen.
