A local arboretum, Powell Gardens, has some very nice orchids on display in their visitor center. I made my first trip out there last week and it is a flower photographers wonderland. I have driven by this place lots of times and never stopped. I will not make that mistake again.
Here are a couple of the orchids from that visit.

Really liked the last one. Which aperture did you use for that shot? If you could have blurred out the background a little bit more, the orchids would really pop! But great shot!

One of the projects during a photo course I took was to photograph orchids at the local orchid farm. We were advised to use dark grey or green card as a background. Did you use flash on your shots? I too particularly like No. 2.

Thanks widowmaker. Both were taken with the Sigma 150 macro at 100 ISO. The 1st one is SS .4 @ F16 and the 2nd one was SS 1/5 @ F8. I do have another of the 2nd one shot at F 4.5 but the top left bloom is getting too blurred. The background does look better it it though.

No flash panasonic. I did use a 12" silver reflector though. This was inside a glass greenhouse and it was slightly overcast outside so the lighting was very even.

Orchids are beautiful. Wonderful colors. Definitely take your time at Powell Gardens during all seasons of the year. It is constantly changing. I'm an avid flower photographer and enjoy going to Powell Gardens regularly. If you haven't ever been to the Johnson County Arboretum out on 69 highway, I would recommend going there for some amazing shots as well.

Thanks mere. I have been out to the OP Arboretum but the mosquitos about carried me away. It might be okay right now but later in the year it is not worth getting eaten alive. Maybe this second winter we are having right now will kill lots of them. :)
