Flash question

I am going to sound like a complete newby by asking this.

How do I properly use a flash with my camera?

I know where the flash goes, how to turn it on, take a photo so the flash goes off.

My question is how do you know what settings to use on the camera? How do you compensate shutter speed when you have a flash on?

Once you help me understand I will laugh with you at these questions.

Those are good questions! Using flash effectively requires understanding certain concepts, and a different thought process than shooting in ambient light.
