hi folks, i have a problem with hooking up my iP6700D.

the computer can't find the printer via usb 2.0 port.

i get to the stage where the animation shows hooking up the usb and turning the printer on. i do this and nothing happens.

i checked all usb ports with my external HD and they are working. my cable seems okay (brand new) with the ohm meter passing current through what i can test through the new cable.

i tried all LPT ports and COM ports, in the available port choices for hook-up. i would think the USB 2.0 PCI slot card would show up as an option, but it isn't.

i can print from a memory card and from the 30D camera, but not the computer, which is my main objective.

can anyone suggest something to look at? change? install? maybe a new driver?

help is appreciated.

rob

Did you run the installation program from the disk before connecting the printer? What operating system are you using?

Is the USB PCI only USB option that you have on your computer?

no, i have two other ports not being used:

1) serial - small port (blue/green coloured)
2) printer port - larger connection (magenta coloured)

could i use one of these? but i would need a cable with a printer connection on one end and a usb connection on the other end. would that work?

anyone?

That's not preciselly what I've asked. Do you have any other USB connectors appart from the PCI card? Serial and LPT, I don't think would work, at least I've never seen convertor from USB to Serial or LPT. Other option is if you try reinstalling your USB card, or even better you might try to plug it in other PCI slot, then it would be recognised as new device.
I really can't see a reason why shouldn't your printer work, if as you've said, external HD works like a charm.

When you plug the printer into the computer and turn the printer on, do you get the "ping-pong" connection sound from the pc?

oh, sorry, the only other usb connection i have at is at the front panel of the pc, but it's usb 1. i installed a new card in the back, usb 2, which is what i am using. i have tried the front connection as well, but nothing there as well.

i'll try using a different slot and start from scratch.

wondering if the cable is no good. it's a cheaper cable, $6. i have read that there are cables for usb 1 and 2, different shielding? i tried hooking it up on my neighbors new computer, but it doesn't work there either.

puzzled ?!

Pete, no, no ping pong sounds anywhere in regards to the printer. i went to the canon site and downloaded the driver, but was told by the pc when i was installing it, that i have a newer driver already installed.

Then it can be USB cable. And yes there is difference in between usb1 and 2 cables but only in quality of material used to produce them, pins are exactly the same, I doubt that is an issue here. Maybe you have a friend where you can borrow another USB cable? Try that first, before opening PC. :)

un, okay, duh, i was using the wrong port on the printer, didn't see the one in the back, figured the one at the front panel was to be used. my friend questioned 'why the cable stick out at front?'. so it doesn't stick out the front anymore, it's in the back where it belongs.

thanks for your input folks and hoped you had a chuckle, i did!

printer works fine now!!!

Dah :) Never crossed my mind :) you were trying to connect printer via PictBridge compatible USB connector in front :D Actually, I had hard time finding USB on 6700 myself :)
Cheers, and happy printing!
P.S. You might check Ilford paper, I like the results more than with Canon Photo pro and Photo Plus. Currently I have Smooth Pearl from Ilford, and will check out soon Classic Pearl.

Haha.. I bet that usb connector out the front is an onward lead.

This is why I tend to read the manual pretty carefully, even when I think I know how things work.
