i recently went into my local photo optix a few weeks ago and the person who was working that night had his 30D in along with a metz flash. it wasnt that busy that night so he brought it out to show me his metz flash. this is the first time ive seen one.
now, these things are much cheaper than obviously a 580EX flash right?
i have a wedding im shooting for a friend over in spain in sep and was maybe looking to pick up another flash before then.
what model would i actually be looking for, for my 350D and 30D.
do you's think it'd be worth picking one of these up as opposed to a 580EX, or maybe hold off till i have enough money to fund a 580EX?

thanks :D

I've owned the Metz 54MZ-4 flash, it's a great one. More powerful and more options than the 580EX.

BEWARE, however, that if you want to shoot ETTL mode with the Metz you lose the "wink" light (secondary flash tube). It's the secondary flash tube that you use with bounce light that makes the flash so extraordinary. Take away the wink light and it's no different than the 580EX. I sold my 54MZ-4 after discovering that as I wanted the bounce + wink light.

The Metz flashes are not significantly different in pricing from the Canon counterpart with equivalent flash output power.

The Metz flashes have the advantage of being able to switch modules, to make the same unit compatible with most every brands/models of cameras, whereas the Canon is permanently dedicated. I can use the same Metz on four different cameras in my photographic inventory, for example.

A benefit of the Metz is also its precise Auto flash output, that wedding photographers worldwide learned to trust.

The current Metz lineup that works with Canon ETTL is the MZ series like the 54MZ and 76MZ, and the newer 58AF1 which is compatible with Canon wireless.

yeah, your right, they arent cheaper. i thought they were. i guess i should just purchase the 580EX when i have the funds then. that way i could use my 430EX as a slave if ever i wanted to.
thanks for the info guys on the metz anyway. guess you learn something everyday on here eh :D
