I thought these might be of interest.

All with the Canon 30D, 100-400mm IS and Kenko Pro 300 DG - actual focal length 560mm.

I don't mind saying that I'm very pleased with the lens/converter combo - 560mm, IS, AF (pins taped - it works great) - all in a small, easy to manage bundle.

Oh, I should add that the swan is at a nominal f/5.6 - I think that's pretty sharp for wide open with a converter in the way..!

Well that looks like a better combo than my 20d with the 100-400 and canon 1.4tc II.
Ive never had any come out that sharp.

Very useful to see ... I wasn't impressed with the same combo on my ex 100-400mm due to hunting but clearly it is possible to get very decent shots. I just picked up another one and had been thinking I'd sell my Canon 1.4x but I think I'll give it another go once the L arrives. Thanks :-)

Wow, very impressive performance. Maybe i should sell my Sigma 1.4x TC and get a Kenko 1.4x.

Very nice pictures, by the way I use a Canon 20D with a 100-400 IS and use a Kenco 1.5x TC and dont have to tape the pins down to maintain Auto Focus.

Nice series Keith! I've always been happy with the performance of my 100-400 with either Kenko Pro or Canon 1.4x TC's. FWIW the prime 400 5.6 with TC's is sharper but has a very strange hunting behaviour even in good light.

The male stonechat is superb!

Very nice series of shots Keith, chalk one up for the Kenko TC. Might have to order one of those puppies.

Thanks all.

In truth, these are nothing more than random test shots - no real thought put into the aesthetics, or I'd have avoided the blue sky as a BG to the stoneys - but I think they go some way to balancing up the doom and gloom you read about the ability of the zoom with an converter/extender.

I'm off down to North Norfolk for a week from tomorrow (the UK guys on here will understand my excitement about that!) and hopefully I'll come back with some "proper" pictures from this set-up.

i found my results to be very similar using my mkII+ 100-400+ kenko pro. i think that for static object, you can get very sharp images (even better if you stop it down a notch). however, for birds in flight, i find the combo to be relatively slow and inconsistent (i hate typing this word)
