Really good shots here, that combo works very well. I absolutely love the eider shots as it's one of my favorite birds anyway, but to get all that detail and see the eye...tough thing to do. Great exposure too.

Fabulous shots! Thanks for posting an antidote to the 100-400 + TC "doom and gloom"; it gives me hope and will keep the 100-400 on my wish list.

I thought the the 30d's crop will give you 400x1.6=624mm give and take. Times the 1.4 from the tube. Is about 896mm

Thanks all.

Hi Silvex,

the focal length is the focal length as far as I'm concerned - I never take the crop factor into consideration.

Wow great shots. I just got a 100-400 with a Canon 1.4 and I can't get anything very sharp. With the TC, you lose autofocus and focusing manually without any focus aids (like the old split prism of my much loved T-90) it's near impossible to know when you're sharp. I'd love more discussion on exactly how you accomplished this - tripod, stance, did you lose autofocus with your Kenko?, etc

The make split screen focus screens for the 20D and 30D and others, but they are worthless. They only work below f/5.6 and what good is that?

I agree. No autofocus OR split screen above f5.6 - what's a person to do?

Why? Will it give you autofocus below f8? I like the 1.6 conversion factor as I need the reach for wildlife.

I have the same set up. I've taped the pins (yes, the correct ones) stood in the midday sun, and cannot, for the life of me, get the lens to AF. I gotta be doing something wrong, but haven't a clue. Manually focusing is a bit tricky with the focus ring being so far out. I'm about to put the Canon 1.4TC up for sale, if I can't figure out a workaround.:(
