Yeah, you just put the hard drive on something non-conductive like a piece of cardboard. I keep my spare hard drives in a plastic storage box when I'm not backing up data to them.

Some people don't like to handle the bare hard drives too much. If you'd feel more comfortable with a hard drive housing, Apricorn external housings (external link) have a good reputation in the computer hardware forum I hang out in.The adapter I linked to comes in aUSB 2.0 to SATA version too. (external link) This one gets recommended quite a bit in the computer forum I hang out in. I have the USB 2.0 to IDE only version but will need to pick up the SATA version soon. Many of the computers I work on have SATA hard drives in them now. I have a Apricorn SATA external housing for that but it's not as convenient.I was a little nervous about handling bare drives often too (that's why I have 10 external housings...LOL) but it's more convenient to just use the cable adapter and leave the hard drives in a protective plastic box until I need them. I use a Brother P-Touch labeler to label the bare hard drives so I know what kind of data each one holds. The Apricorn housings have a cooling fan in them to help keep the hard drive cool. I have a bunch of Bytecc aluminum external housings that have no cooling fan but I've never had heat problems with them even if the external hard drive is running for hours. I think it's because the aluminum housing acts like a big heatsink.I don't encrypt but I do live in a older neighborhood and almost all of my neighbors are retired and a few are really nosey. We also have 3 dogs in the house...one is a chihuahua that loves to bark. And a police officer lives a few houses down from us...he set up the Neighborhood Watch.

:) Chris

The Apricorns look good--a few years ago I had been looking for enclosures with fans but didn't know what brands were good. I may just go that route.

I don't mind handling the bare drives, but I would leave it out and my office at home is pretty dusty so I'd rather have it in a housing. I definitely could use those cables at work, though.

My street is good with a lot of good people but you never know.

Thanks for the info, it really helps.

Yep, that's Kaneohe/Kahaluu alright...rain, rain, rain...actually it's been a little dryer this year, hasn't been raining nearly as much as last year.

Nice series of the temple, ZENGHOST.

:) Chris

Thanks. Yeah, I can't complain. Other than that 5-10 minutes there was no rain and the overcast day was perfect lighting. I was surprised it didn't rain more.

How about keeping a HD with your work at a safe in a bank?
The smallest box is $35/year, so I've been considering doing this.
(...with whatever important papers I have at home).

$35/year is definitely reasonable, I thought they cost more than that--I might have to check that out. I actually was more worried about the thieves having access to my info more than me not having it anymore, although I am worried about both. I have some collectibles that could go in there as well. Most of my important stuff is in my parents' safety deposit boxes, but I should probably get my own.

I liked the Heiau Mountain. Looks like that photo was taken at Kahoolawe. You can see Molokini Island and Maui in the background. The theme was “Breathtaking Views of Hawaii — The views that make Hawaii unique.”

I havent bought the kit, but straws are used to create a grid. It modifies the light coming out of your flash into a circle shape with feathered borders.

how does this work or look?

hmmm. pros and cons. i'm not sure. i like that i can recover almost anything. provided it was backed up in time machine. My work computer is backed up every hour. and then out IT guy backs up the external taht i have backing up the main HDD.

con is that apple reccomends that you have an external back up the HDD. Too bad not all externals are all THAT reliable. i lost around 200 photos from 06-2005 to 08-2005. since i didn't get to burn those to CDs yet.

:-(

did that make sense? i hope so. O_O.

Yeah, I just bought another ext HD so I could free up my internal HD. That USB cable transfer is very slow. Now I will have two ext HDs (different brands) and DVDs as backups. I ordered 100 Taiyo Yuden DVDs yesterday. Researched them to be most reliable for archive.

i do hear you on that. sometimes flash is needed. but i do prefer shooting with entirely natural light when possible, because it preserves the natural dimension and contrast of the subject. It also flatters the subject by keeping skin soft with minimal shine...majority of the time making it not so harsh/hard on the skin.

thats just the way i feel though. :-)

Oh hey! don't get me wrong...I love natural light :D I am a huge natural light shooter, and use it solely when can...... But what I should have said is don't put limitations on yourself. I mean if you can learn iso settings, f/ stops, and EV value you are already over the hump.

Got a nice belated Christmas present from myself yesterday. I'm going to be paying it off for awhile but I think it was worth it. Hopefully I can put it to good use.
