Backups: I keep original files on ext. hard drives and backup two copies on dvd's. It is just a matter of time until you lose data on hard drives.

John - What's with the head chopping? It looks better on a tight head shot. Your also chopping off fingers. Have you tried hair lights? Try a one light set-up too, to give it some different moods.

for those of you with a 70-200 2.8 IS, how often do you use the IS?

when i was using my friends one i usually had it on when i was low light. if i was shooting action i turned it off. but most of the time i was shooting low light with it. in a chapel, bnaquet hall, etc.

that was for events. if i was shooting PJ stuff for the Ka Leo, i would turn it off.

if i sell my car, im getting one of those lenses, but i do still want to be a bit conservative with the purchase. I havent really been spoiled by IS, so i think i could do without it.

Is there an Off switch?

There's an off switch for all IS lenses. You generally don't want the IS on when shooting action because of the slight lag in the shutter before the IS activates. And I believe the older versions were supposed to be turned off when placed on a tripod because they could burn out (I'm not positive about this).

between a flash, ambiant lighting, and f2.8 and a slightly high iso, would that be enough to rule out IS?

^nice, hopefully you dont have one with a focusing problem.

Hope not. That was my biggest fear going into this purchase. I bought it second hand from a sports shooter and the sub-mirror fix has already been done on it. The warranty is good until the end of the year and if I have any problems the original owner (who is a Canon CPS member) offered to help me with any warranty issues if they come up. Hopefully I never have to take him up on that offer but I haven't fully tested the AF and frankly I'm not sure I'd be able to recognize the problem if I ran into it. But since he's a pro shooter I'm banking on his approval of it.

Very nice... A whole new ball game with 1D series! Congrats!

Definitely, now if I could develop the skill to play in the new ball game...

zeng...LUCKY! :)

And broke :). Buying a new car and then a 1D III a week later was not the best of planning but that's just how it worked out.

I'd put a piece of tape or a drop of glue on the toe screw. I lost 2 of them already. Its the black screw on the left of the camera.

Thanks for the tip, Kyler.

When you lose stuff, you become a little more paranoid.

Definitely. I haven't lost a lot, but I've come close to losing all my stuff a couple of times and those situations really make you thing about backups. It's one thing to lose landscape stuff like my Byodo-In pics, but the ones of my nephews growing up are irreplaceable.

I keep it on most of the time--mainly because I forget to take it off, but also because I shoot a lot of low light stuff and anytime I'm below that 1/200th shutter speed I tend to want it on since I don't have the steadiest of hands.

It's hard to say. I think it just depends on what kind of SS you're getting for that particular situation. But in general if you're using a flash I would think that in most cases you'd be pretty good.

let me also add my disclaimer of: "I'm no expert so you may want to wait for someone smarter to answer the question."

Can't say I agree with what has been said about IS and action shots. I have the 100-400 IS L and and I always leave the IS on when shooting surfing etc. I shoot at 400mm (640mm effective on 20D) handheld and get great results with IS on. The proper way to use IS is to push the shutter button halfway (pre-focus) and let the IS catch up to your motion. Continue holding the shutter button halfway, and after about a second (you can hear the IS working) then you push the shutter button the rest of the way to take the shot.

If I am shooting action, I hold the shutter button half way to pre-focus on the subject, follow the subject, and then at the height of action I press it all the way for the shot or press it and hold it down for a series of shots.

"Shutter lag" etc is not a problem, but to get the full benefit of IS, you should not just point and shoot (press shutter button all the way at once).

If IS is available as an option on the lens you want, I would get it.
