Haha now I know who checks my Exif. I edited the exif to throw people off. It wasn't at 1/2500 nor was it at 85mm, and no it wasn't the 70-300

haha. I thought that was kind of funny and I'm amused that you did that - either as a joke or a prank. whatever. that would have been a good april fools since it was so subtle.

DOF is so shallow, Im not sure what this was either. I know you said it wasnt the 70-300 and Im thinking it could possibly be pulled off with a 70-200 @ 200 2.8. But I am thinking it was something larger like a 400 f/4? idk, im curious myself to know what it was.

Haha man, this is actually entertaining :P The only 2.8 lens is the 24-70, and that is the widest aperture lens I have. I'll say this to either confuse people further, or get people to realize how I did it. It was shot w/ a 17-85.

I believe that a forum is about helping others and sharing what you know yourself, but exif data really will only tell you:
1. How the photog controlled bg blur.
2. What shutter speed/ISO to overcome hand shake.

but you do agree that this is information. To me, any information is sharing knowledge, and helping people. How does purposely changing exif help people?

doesn't make any sense. maybe i'm thinking too linearly. Is there some kind of new fangled teaching technique that helps people figure out how the photog controlled depth of field, and what shutter speed/ISO was used to prevent hand shake? Whew...maybe my photo profs at UH should learn this. Seems like they maybe behind in the learning.

Just try to make some shoots first and fine tune your settings until you are satisfied with them. 2 cameras will help, one with wide angle lens and the other with telephoto.

thats what i did for the first concert i shot. Before i went into the photog area infront of the stage, i did some metering, figured out what settings i should have my camera at then prayed to god that i was correct. i did shoot full manual on both my cameras. although since i was totally in the front at first, i did have my 24-70 on my 1D, and a 85mm 1.8 on the 20D. later when i went to the back of pipeline form the control booth or whatever i slapped hte 70-200L 2.8 IS on there.

exif - I don't see any reason to hide it or change it. What are you trying to hide? If it is there and people wan to see it (to learn etc) then let them see it. No harm in that.

Now for something off topic....anyone have a Garmin GPS and good Hawaii maps for it? I just got the Garmin 60CSx and so far the maps that I have for it suck and I am thinking about bringing it back.

thanks

my friend has a 60CSx. He loves it. He did lose his first one of the side of koko head crater while we were geocaching. we did spend the entire day combing the side of the mountain. :-\

if you want i can ask him if hes got maps.

After reading all those comments, you should have turned in an essay. :p Luckily, Mr. PJ, your journalism is better than your photos.  j/k we can see your stuff is always getting better.

I do owe a lot of learning experiences to POTN. My processing improved by observing what kind of style attracts more comments and applying them to mine to see if it works. Also those tips on the landscape sticky really work.

thanks lincoln. so...website? :p

i agree that's just mean spirited. :(

i did find it a little weird that the maximim aperture was f/5.7
O_O

also thought it was weird that you would shoot at 1/2500 at iso400. not something i would expect you to do.

i thought it was my program that was acting weird...turns out it was jsut you. :p oh well. so what;d you shoot it with and at what settings then?

and why change your exif? whats the purpose behind it. not like im gonna go fly to japan to find the sakura you took a photo of just to take a similar photo. O_O

Everyone else - whats your take on exif. hide or no hide, and why/why not? i know you cn view exif on flickr. i think its a cool learning tool to see how others shoot and what not. its more of a technical learning aspect thingy-mabobber. if ppl wanna look at my exif . i say go right ahead. enjoy.

I personally hide my EXIF but that's just me. Nothing to hide or anything. Just that I find it not important.

at the risk of sounding ignorant, what do you want the maps to do?

I will mainly use the gps for hiking and kayaking. Both here and back in New England. I have two sets of maps right now - the 100k US series and the 24k Eastern Natl Parks series. The 100k maps pretty much suck for Hawaii - there is no detail and they don't even have street names. The 24k topo maps are great - lots of details and trails show up on them. The problem is that Garmin only has the 24k maps for national parks and forests. So they don't cover my home area in Mass or Oahu (there is only limited coverage for Maui and the Big Island). The 100k maps that cover my home town in Mass are a joke. The area around the ocean doesn't even come close to matching reality. The maps show flats where there are none and there are entire islands missing.

I want 24k resolution for Oahu and Massachusetts. As far as I can see online you can not get that from Garmin.

As a gps handheld, the 60 CSx seems very good, it is just that the 100k maps really suck and the 24k maps are extremly limited in coverage. I guess I could go buy the Road Map map set and the Blue Water map set for another $300 but I did not want to spend $600 for this stuff (I already spent $300 on the 60 CSx).

I'd like to see if the Road Map set has more detail than the 100k US set. Specifically does it show trails and does the coastline areas have more details.

If you can talk to your friend and see what he has, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

- darren

I have a crap load of Garmin maps. I'll give you some later. I do have the Hawaii Topo, the older one.
