I have this set-up (external link). Bought from here (external link). The 4x5 filter on this page (external link). They had a package deal for the longest time and they stopped it recently. You need a holder, an adaptor ring for your lens size, and the 4x5 filter. I have a .6 soft, .9 soft and a .9 hard. If you are getting only one filter, I would recommend the .9 soft. The hard edge is used for a horizon with a hard straight line like the ocean.

Is this (external link) the package you were talking about? It has a holder, adapter, and one filter. Think it's time for me to finally put in an order.

I was out and about for the past few days and got some decent stuff. Nothing spectacular but it was better than sitting around at home and not getting any shots.

Couldn't decide if I liked the color or black and white better--what do you guys think? Couldn't decide if I liked the flare or not.:

Thought this shot was kinda cool

I like the color version better. The flare just doesn't look right to me in the B/W version

Yes, that's the one... I could not find it earlier.

Thanks everyone for the comments on the last photo. Hopefully she'll be represented in the future. This girl is a model from Kathy Muller though.

also on a side note while doing the past two shoots.. using the 50mm 1.4 @1.4 when there is a rimlight present it produces unusable shots. the CA is so bad that it looks like there's a neon bar on the edges of the girls. CA is gone at like.. 1.8/2ish

Really? I haven't noticed any CA with mine. Of course, I don't do much shooting at f1.4 I have a hard time of nailing the focus and end up with slightly OOF images.

I used a tripod when i shot at 1.4. I might have some examples, I'll post one up if I find one.

How do you get the focus spot on? I have a really hard time getting it on the eyes.

The 40D has cross-sensors at each point and a double cross in the center so focusing isn't a problem. I'll just place the eyes exactly on a point, and crop in PS later. I tried Live View and that worked too but took too long. Here's an example of the CA.

Aloha! from Toronto, Canada! :D

Anyhow, I'm going to in Hawaii for 2 weeks (Oahu, Big Island, Maui, and Kauai) and was wondering where I can find a good camera store? In particular, I was thinking of looking for a Gitzo tripod to pick up while I'm there (of course at the start of my vacation)... just curious how competetive the prices are there?

Thanks!

Roadrunnr, I think your best bet will be to buy it online somewhere, probably B&H. Hawaii doesn't have a big market for cameras so there's a lot of inflation in the prices to keep the businesses going.

maybe you've got a junk copy of the 50? Mines shoes no real signs of chromatic aberrations at 1.4

bummer dude.

Its not my lens haha. It only happens when there's rimlight or the bg is blown out. If the highlights are right before they get blown out its fine. I'll probably pick one up soon. Lens is sharper than the 24-70 @ 50mm/5.0, when the 50mm is at 2.0.

Thanks PocketNinja! I figured I asked anyhow :) I'll bring my current tripod then.. luckily I will have a rental car at each island.
