I am drooling reading about what some people have. All I got with my 30 D is a 18-55 and 75-300 that came with the camera at a 4.0-5.6 F . I seem to be doing fine , though.
Is a 50 mm sharper than a 18-55 mm.
Is it a real big deal to have a 1.8 vs 4.0???

Thanks for any feedback

All prime's are sharper than the kit lens (and zooms in general). As for 1.8 vs 4.0- it's a huge deal. f/4 isn't usable in low light and won't blur the backround half as much as f/1.8 The difference is undeniable.

If you're doing fine then stick with what you have, plain and simple. Once you notice shortcomings then look into other lenses.

I managed to go a whole year with my kit stuff before upgrading and I did ok. It's always nice to dream about upgrading though!

My 50mm is the sharpest lens I have.
You're not going to do any harm in getting the nift fifty 1.8. but you say you seem to be doing fine, if your happy, stick with what you have, when you feel the need for a faster lens, that's the time to get your wallet out. But be warned, once you start buying more gear based on it's quality it's a slippery slope :-)

One of the best answers I have observed--when you have the desire to make the next step--you will have a good idea what you need to get there.
