Well, Adobe just needs to get some extra cash from the EU community just in case they decide to sue them for monopolizing the Graphics arts market over there.

I assume their reasoning for the D/L being more money, is that there's no break on cost for X number of downloads, versus bulk cd's being stamped and shipped.

That's my only thought.

personally this sort of thing should be expanded to not just software but other "world released products"

I tunes for instance, etc.

iTunes isn't a good example because they're sellling goods whose copyrights are owned by a third party. Apple claims that the rights holders claim there are country-specific fees which makes it impossible to provide one iTunes store for everyone in the world. That's not to say that there isn't some shenanigans going on with product prices that vary by country -- but iTunes is theoretically not one of them.

If you live in an EU member state and you buy a product from a member in another state you pay the VAT at the local tax. Ireland is 19%, UK 17.5%, Germany IIRC 16% and Netherlands 21% (from memory). The rules change if you yourself are registered for VAT.

Items being imported into the EU attract at port of entry, so if you bought something and you live in Holland but your brother lives in Germany, send it to him so it enters the EU at Germany and then its free movement of goods inside the EU.

Your math is off. It's 60% more ("more" meaning "in addition to".)

Oh, you are quite right, I actually didn't do any math I just copied it off of a site I stumbled across. I have no Idea where they got 190% from???

It's the same in Australia. Lightroom is A$315 (the dollar is around 82 cents US at the moment so it costs US$258.30). The Adobe Australia store website is in Ireland and the download address is from the Irish server.

Any news on your camera yet? I see from your sig that's it's still "being repaired" - how did you exams go with your "borrowed" one?

Maybe we should start a global movement to get prices regulated across the net?

Why pay more, when it's a global store?tm

(Hmm... that sounds good!)

you pay the VAT at the local tax. Ireland is 19%

Unfortunately VAT is 21% here. I once queried Microsoft on the XP upgrade price as I was able to buy it from Amazon UK cheaper than through an Irish store and the difference was a lot more that the 3.5% Vat differencial, they claimed they don't control local pricing. Funny thing was when it arrived it had a made in Ireland label on the box. It seems it comes down to what they can get away with rather than any set markup.

I think that you may have hit the nail on the head here.

Does anyone know if a US purchased copy of CS3 upgrade can be used with a UK purchased CS2 full version - I have plenty of American friends - just thinking!!

Cheers

Well, there are plenty of plausible reasons for this foremost of which is passing costs on to consumers and if costs of doing business in Europe are more then they will charge more for their product. Most global corporations don't pool their costs and divide it equally among regions. It's just a fact.

You can even hear a Photoshop product manager explain it a little here: http://www.tipsfromthetopfloor.com …product-manager-at-adobe/ (external link)

As for you petition, good luck, you'll need it. There is little chance that anything will amount from it though.
