Ah, thanks for clearing that up Mike, I see what you mean. I would have thought though that it could make the "keywords" panel a little cumbersome if there had to be and "AND + OR" buttons alongside each word (?)

.... and then ofcourse there is the issue of "Grouping" the "AND's" and the "OR's" - depending on where you put the "OR" returns a whole different data set, so my comment (above) regarding placement of radio buttons wouldn't work.

I guess the only way round it would be a pop-up in which to build the "search string", not dissimilar to the "Find" window as it is now!!

TJ

Someone mentioned before that Elements had checkboxes on the outside of each keyword that did something. I will have to dig around to see what thread that was in. Maybe something like that could be implemented but I see your point. You might want "This" and ("That" or "Those") which couldn't be done with global checkboxes for "and" or "or". I need to play around with the find panel some more now that we have been discussing it. Maybe I am missing something.

Sorry TJ,

I've been doing a million things and I think I just jumbled some names and threads all at the same time.

As far as handling different file types, It does that rather well and can display the file type (extension) if you wish but it handles it all seamlessly so you don't have to think about file type if you don't want to. Of course, if you're doing edits, or multiple edit and save in Photoshop, you want to work on the CR2 (RAW) and not the JPG.

Mike,

It's probably me you hear who keeps going on about the checkboxes next to keywords in Elements.

Kind of the box at the bottom this page in the "quick reply" area where you can choose to show your signature.

In Elements, if you click the box, it shows images with that keyword. You click a second box on, it shows images containing only both keywords.

Plus, if you click a "parent" keyword, it will show images containing any of the child keywords... its really quite flexible and intuitive when you see it in action. Even people who are computer illeterate seem to understand it right away when they see it (its just hard to explain in words.)

As far as the RAW+Jpeg issue earlier in the thread, I can understand that if you want to process the image, you'd likely want to process the RAW... but how do you KNOW you want to process the RAW vs. the Jpeg if you can't see both within lightroom to compare them? (Speaking from the point of trying to stay within one application) I'd like to make that decsion within lightroom, not windows explorer or some other program... plus if I decide to go with the jpeg over the RAW, I then have to remove the RAW from the library and import the jpeg... whew... I'm out of breath just thinking about it.

Also, since Lightroom is being touted as a DAM, it seems senseless that it fails to Manage half of your Digital Assets! :)

Maybe I shouldn't, but I still tend to save BOTH files to my hard drive as then I can use some auto-creation software to generate some web images, from the jpegs, for uploading to a web server. This allows very quick turn-round of images where a client wants on-line image approval and selection.

Do I still need to do it this way?... or is there an easier way using Lightroom?

Lightroom can create web resolution JPEGs from the RAW files, create a web gallery in flash or HTML, and upload it to your server for your clients review. I used to use external software to do this, but now do it all in LR. I find it just as easy, and since I usually run some batch tweaks on the RAW files before making the gallery, I get better quality JPEGs for the web gallery than I would if I took the straight JPEGs to make then.

Timewise, I can usually have a web gallery up within an hour after a shoot, and that includes basic image corrections, metadata, keywords, ratings and lables, etc. Although I tell my clients a gallery will be put up within 24hrs, and usually just do it the next morning. If they are in a big hurry (and are willing to pay rush chgs), I can just apply global metadata (copyright, job name, contact info, etc) during the import, create the gallery and upload in about 20 minutes. So its fairly fast and easy to do it in LR rather than use an external program.

I would suggest that you create a list of questions or concerns, then download the trial version and use some duplicate test images and folders. You'll not only answer most of your questions, but will be able to see real world differences between the your solution and LR.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Stephan, I have the trial version of Lr, although I must admit to being too busy to have used it very much - although I was under the impression that a number of "key" areas in the beta had been updated/removed for version 1.0

It is good to get peoples thoughts and impressions though. I will have another look - although maybe I ought to open my wallet and simply BUY IT!

Thanks

TJ

The price goes up at the end of April to $299 so decide before then.

Is there a way to import folders containing subfolders with images? Or do I have to go into those folders and select all the images to be imported.

Yes. When choosing import location, select main folder containing subfolders of pictures, and then at bottom select "choose selected" and "all" images in the subfolders will be imported.

(I put "all" in quotes, because there are exceptions (pixel size, RAW+jpeg in same folder, etc.)

Robert, shouldn't that be $199? (otherwise it makes it equivelant to £50 over here  )

One other point....

In the Beta version, when you ingest a memory card, it only gives you the option to import the files into the "Lightroom Library" - which is Lightroom's own designated folder. Is it possible, with V1.0, to simply tell Lightroom where you want the files to go - in other words - just select the folder from a drop-down (or create a new one on-the-fly)

I know you can select a folder from which to import from (so that will handle my existing file structure) but I'm just wondering whether I'll need to copy the files from the card first, THEN import into Lr.

Thanks (yet again)

TJ

TJ,

When you import the file data (not the file itself) gets included in the LR library file. YOu can choose wheter to leave the image where it is or copy or move it to a new folder location.

Hi TJ,

No, that price is correct. Educational pricing on Lightroom is $99.
