TJ,

When you import the file data (not the file itself) gets included in the LR library file. YOu can choose wheter to leave the image where it is or copy or move it to a new folder location.

Thanks, I think I follow!

I believe I'm correct in saying that Adobe is using Microsoft's SQL database, so all the "image info" will be stored in there, its just that the "default" target location for imported images appears to be in the "Documents Settings...<user>...\Lightroom\Managed Files\" folder.

I've just found the setting in "Edit->Preferences" that allows the default target "managed folder" to be changed, but it has to be empty. Never mind, I guess I can simply re-import my photo's over a period of time.

Thanks again.

Well, thats it, I've done it now.

No more "shall I / shan't I" - the order has been placed.

I've ordered Lightroom along with Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom. I was pretty impressed with his no-nonsense approach (although maybe some might disagree!) in his CS2 book, so fingers crossed!

No doubt I will be back here shortly asking some MORE questions. :-)

Sucker, we have converted another one. Another notch on the wall boys.:p Congrats and enjoy. Also please let us know about Kelby's book. I am debating on picking it up. I have already downloaded tons of tutorials but I prefer books for learning.

Managed folder is something differet - more like Watched Folders in PSE. YOu should be able to set the default import folder in the import dialogue.

Note that you can also set LR to backup the database to a selected location and perform this operation daily/weekly/monthly.

Well if you already do backups of everything anyway you don't have to perform the LR backup. ;) But I perform it once a week right now. If I used it more often it would probably be daily.

All comments noted guys.

Although Al, I'm not sure I agree with you about the "watched folder" - maybe they've changed it since the Beta version(?) If I select Import->EOS Dogital (to import from a CF card) I dont get a choice about "where they are going" - it simply imports the images into a folder structure within the "managed photo's" folder.

Whereas if I manually copy the images to a folder of my choosing, THEN import them into Lr, (by I think selecting Import->Folder - can't exactly remember as my laptops switched of at the moment) it simply logs their whereabouts in its database. (I think!)

And I couldn't agree more about backing up data - I get paranoid about it sometimes. I've got additional USB hard-drives sticking out of every orrifice (now there's a photo opportunity!) I have a piece of software that I run that "mirrors" all my images automatically onto an external drive.

As I used to work in the IT industry (and still do some consultation/software design work) - I've seen grown men almost crying over lost data "...you have got a backup, haven't you?"

TJ,

Will check when home later... I'm sure there is a way to do what you want within LR....

Thanks, I'll also have another look when I switch my laptop back on. It could well be that they have changed the process since the Beta 4 version.

It sounds like a lot has changed in Version 1.0 since the Beta.

TJ,

IF you are going off the Beta, forget it! LR 1.0 is like a whole new package!

Thanks Mike - I'll keep you posted.

I'm quite impressed with Scott Kelby's book, I guess it all depends on how each individual prefers doing things. His CS2 book takes you staright to the point.... if you want to do this, then click, this, this and this. (if only everything was that simple!)

The only negative is the book will take a few days longer to arrive, but hey, that just means a longer list of questions to resolve when it gets here!

I have LR set up to auto detect a card and open LR (if not already open) when inserted. The dialog box allows me to select where to import (I choose Convert images to DNG). Then I let LR sort the files by date (It creates a folder for each day there is an image) as subfolders of the folder I chose (To be Sorted is mine). I can get a screen shot later if you need.

I like his CS2 book as well which is why I am curious about the Lightroom book.

I am trying to use Collections to manage my workflow... Currently every import gets added to 5 collections under a Workflow parent collection. Then as each stage gets completed they are removed from the Collection...

Still teething but seems to work OK and I can instantly see what images are at which stage of work.
