TJ,

It’s my experience that LR will place RAW, PSD in the same folder and even in the same stack.

Example I make adjustments to a DNG/RAW file in Lightroom then right choose edit in CS-2 which creates a PSD copy of the file in LR. After I’ve finished editing, mostly healing and cleaning I choose save then close and the PSD is updated in LR. If latter on I go back to RAW and want to make a few changes when I choose edit in CS-2 it creates another PSD file these files have –Edit-1, 2 at the end of the file name. If say I want to make some adjustments to PSD in LR ie converting it to B&W I usually create a virtual copy and make the adjustments to it. All of these copies are added to the stack with the original RAW file

Since my main use for JPEG is to send images out for printing and or posting to the web I usually just trash them once I’ve received the prints or uploaded them.

Mike

TJ,

Will check when home later... I'm sure there is a way to do what you want within LR....

Here's a LR 1.0 screen capture..

As you can see you can specify the folder to move images into (not the Managed files folder) as well as a backup folder.

Thanks Mike, I think I am going to lie down until my copy of Lr arrives! I guess it will seem clearer when I have the software to play with. Many thanks.

Al, this screen look farmiliar. In the Beta version I seem to think you only get the "select target" option when importing from an "existing location" - if they are being ingested from a card, I dont think that option was available.

As I mention above, I think I really need to now wait until I've got V1.0 installed - at least then I'll be singing off the same sheet as everyone else!

I appreciate the screen shot - thanks.

Al: Just checked your screen shot against the Beta and it's changed radically. It now looks like you can simply select where you want the images to go, whereas before it looks like you only had the option to import into Lightrooms database.

Great News!

If you saw the movie "The Family Man", there is a line that fits perfectly to the Beta vs the V1.0 release.

... "It's only a glimpse" :)

Things are very different, and very much improved.

Why are you waiting? Download the trial version and load it up. Then when your copy arrives just enter the serial number and voila.:) I used the trial for almost the entire 30 days.

Just switched my computer on this morning (9:38am Sat morning) with the sole intention of downloading the latest trial version - and saw your post! (why was I looking at POTN first - just a habit I guess)

The only problem if I do that, all those little jobs that I had lined up for this weekend go flying out the window!

;) :D

Excuse me for reviving this old thread.

Correct me if I'm getting stuff wrong here, I've not even played with the trial version of LR yet.

I'm wondering how LR deals with offline storage. From what I can gather the database is simply storing metadata for the files with a pointer to their location.

My usual workflow (without LR) is to copy new shots to my laptop, and when I'm done working with them, they get copied to my NAS drive over the network (and I only turn the NAS drive on when I need to copy to or from it).

So.. Can LR do what I'm used to doing (working locally and then copying to offline, and retrieving from offline when I need to go back to work on old shots)?

Pete,

As long as the Catalog file and the previews are stored on your local drive you can review, calaog, and generally fiddle with all your images.. If you need to 'develop' images (LR terminology for post processing!) you will need the native files.. but you can just connect to your NAS when you need to. If it can't see the native files it will just show the folder in red but you can still see the full 1:1 preview files (if you selected them at import).

PS. WHat NAS solution do you have? I'm thinking about one.

Thanks Al.

Do you know if LR is able to copy the physical files around (archive/retrieve from archive), or do I need to do that myself (and if so, how does that affect the database)?

The NAS solution I have is a Buffalo Linkstation Pro. It works great for me. Copying to and from using wireless ain't great (speedwise), but it's been stable so far.

Pete,

You can.. indeed once the files are in your LR catalog you SHOULD, that way it can keep track of them.

That's one of the options I was looking at.. the other being Netgear SC101T with 2 mirrored drives. You have your LinkStation plugged into your wireless routeR?

That sounds great, Al. Many thanks.

And yes, the Linkstation is wired into the wireless router via a ethernet cable. My router is downstairs (near the phone socket) and the NAS drive is upstairs in one of the spare bedrooms (the previous owner of my house was a bit of a geek and put a long ethernet cable all around the outside of the house from dining room to upstairs).

Anyone figured out how to import photo's into LR without having them copied from an external drive...I store all my media on an external HD, and everytime I try and import, LR wants to bring them into a folder on the computer.. Is there a way around this?

Yes, in the dialogue box that appears during import you will see a dropdown menu at the top labeled “File Handling:” this will allow you to select how you want to import the files into Lightroom. Make sure it reads "Import photos at their current location"
