Long time listener, first time caller! :D

Currently I have a 50/1.4, 70-400/4 and Tamron 28-75 on my XT. However I am going to London soon and think I will need something wider. I am debating between selling the (very good) 28-75 for the Tamron 17-50, or simply buying either the 10-20 or 10-22. I think the 10-22 plus the 50 would make a very nice light pair to walk around London, covering the wide angles along with good portrait/low light capability.
However the 17-50 upgrade would be cheaper!
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Would 17 mm be wide enough for the tourists spots of London?

Cheers
David

Welcome David,
I think you are right about needing a 10-22 on a crop camera. Bring all the gear you can carry.

On a 350D (Rebel XT) I used the Canon 17-85 IS lens. Found it to be great, esapecially for hand held city street night shots. Very ocasionally I wished for something a bit wider. I now have a Tokina 12-24 and it will be with me next time we go there.

David:

London is awesome! I asked the same questions when we went last year and EVERYBODY said that you didn't need to bring a long lens. So, I took my 10-22 and my 24-70 and my 50 1.4 for low light. I really really wished I had a 70-200 once I was there.

Have a great time and mind the gap!

Ole Joe

I live in London and like to carry both my 70-300 DO and EF-S 17-55 when going on photo shoots with visitors. This combination works nicely.

Welcome to POTN David.

I use my 17-40 a lot around London, my website and flickr is packed full of this lens more than my 24-105. If you want to pick out small detail then take a standard to longer zoom, otherwise the 100mm or less will do very well!

Hi David
As another Londoner i would agree with rammy.
I find i use my 17-55IS (and before that a Tammy 17-50f/2.8) a lot more than i thought i would, even though i had a 24-105L and much prefer longer zooms.
I would say that 17-50 is good for around town and most of the tourist areas but also maybe something longer for picking out or isolating subjects like street performers or details on buildings etc. I would say 10-22 maybe a bit limiting if you need to zoom in.
The Tamron is a really nice lens. i sold my 28-75/f/2.8 to get this and although i missed the extra 25mm i was surprised at how useful the wider end was.
I only got the Canon 17-55IS because i wanted IS after having it in my 24-105L and i was alos off to Florida and only wanted to use one lens if i could.
