Took this picture this morning 12 April 07, 'cos I haven't got a clue what it/they is/are.

It looks like insect eggs, but this cluster is about 100mm by 60mm (4 by 2.5 inches), and that's a big pile of eggs for an insect!! I didn't use flash so the light reflections are from the skylight (it was in the shade). It was on the trunk of a dead tree with the bottom edge just being on the ground.

I also wondered about whether it could be some sort of fungus, maybe the starting of coral fungus?

It was taken in Cambridgeshire, England, in a small wooded area of a local nature reserve.

Any ideas??

It's Tree Eggs.

During the night, one tree will expel these eggs from it's sexual organ. The next night a nearby tree will be attracted by the strong smell, will wander over to this tree and fertilize the eggs.

How else do you think you get small trees, dude?

......er, I dunno what they are.
