Anyone use their 50mm for landscape/cityscape photography? I typically use my 17-40 but have gotten good results with the 50, example:

ive used it for architecture with good results, but i dont have any examples at hand :(. its just a matter of either being able to get back to include what you want, or redefining what you want.

I am mostly curious how many people actually use it for that, it doesn't seem like the norm most likely because it's lack of width but it appears that if you get the right distance it can do pretty well.

I think it would work just fine... and even better if you use PhotoStitch.

Definitely. 50mm buys you distortion free images at a highly cost-effective focal length. Stitch if you need to go laterally wider. Ultra-wide lenses distort, are comparatively weaker in image quality (especially in the corners), push out a centralised subject and bring in unwanted foreground.

Put the camera in portrait orientation and snap a rotation of a dozen shots and stitch them together... That should provide more detail than you know what to do with. :)

As long as the focal length works out for the scene, the 50mm is a darn good lens - especially for the money.

I'm about to find out if it's going to work for me. :D The 50mm f/1.8 is pretty inexpensive, so I'll probably give it a shot. Panoramic photograpy would certainly squeeze more use out of this lens, but if you're the kind that likes to participate in competitions, then it's important to note that they usually don't accept composite images.

I think the 50mm f/1.8 might find more use as a low-light/ street photography/ people lens, rather than for landscapes or architecture...in my setup anyway.
