I'm just curious how users of Lightroom have been printing their work. I do several different types of work and use a few different techniques to get accurate printing for the different types of work I do, but I thought maybe users would share their individual techniques here just as ideas for others to consider.

Please mention the type of work, photography or design you do, the printer(s) and profiles you use and your printing workflow with settings.

Personally, I do fine art reproduction as well as typical art, commercial and private photography, but I have a few different workflows and processes based on the individual needs I face in all these areas. I will share my techniques later in the thread since I do not want them to influence any answers till then.

Discuss...

Excellent post. I can't wait to read it as it grows. I'm still struggling to get Color Management under control enough to generate a print. Currently, I'm testing a new printer and determining if the printer is managing the color or LR.

Don't forget, if you want Photoshop or Lightroom to perform Colour Management you need to turn off the process in the Printers "properties" via the "Printers/Faxes" panel.

I like the way Lightroom prints. It is much better than Photoshop. Currently I select my images and then go to the Print Module. From there I figure out what size I want to print of each image. Once I know that I will select either a template from my existing or create a new one. For here I will create a new one.

1. I select my paper size (I only have one printer) from one of my printer presets that I have already created. Here the preset stores the paper size, type, borderless or not, print quality, and sets color management to Manage by Application.

2. I set the number of cells per page by adjusting the rows and columns section.

3. I then set the cell size by typing in the values rather than dragging the lines on the preview page.

4. I adjust any margins if necessary.

5. I set color management to my profile, in my case I choose my printer+paper+ink (HP 2600+Premium Plus+tricolor+photo) and set Perceptual.

6. I set shapening to medium usually and 300dpi for resolution.

7. I add a new preset in the left panel with a descriptive name for the number of prints, size and paper size/type like maybe: 2-5x7 (8.5x11)

8. I click Print and then OK.

While Lightroom is better than PS I still have a problem with the way it functions and I don't know if it is just me or the program. I really don't see why it is so difficult to allow someone to print multiple size images on one sheet. My wife likes to scrapbook and I am constantly printing several small images (2x2, 2x3, 3x4, 3.5x5). Before I would have to create a new contact sheet everytime I needed to print because the nember of prints always changes. Image Zone, the software that came with my HP printer has better functionality for printing and it was free with the printer. I can choose what size paper (8.5x11) and then select what size and quantity of each print and the program fits all images on the page or multiple pages. Adobe needs to take note here IMO.

Mike, I know you will want to resolve this within Lightroom (and why wouldn't you) but if you happen to be interested in a simple package that will allow ANY number of images to be printed ANY size in ANY postion on a single page, take a look at something called "fotoslate". I have been using version 1 for what seems like years (I think they are on V4 now)

Take a look here.... http://www.acdsee.com/products/fotoslate/index (external link)

yes and no. its not easy. you make a frame in PS, save it as a .png, in the printing section you make your nameplate the frame and place it over the image.

multiple image sizes have definetly been requested, hopefully it comes. I print on roll paper so that would really help me a lot.

QImage is pretty good about this

To add to what Corey mention you could also use Strokes to apply a simple border around the photo.

Yeah Image Zone does it but it sucks having to export the images and then open in IZ to print. Luckily right now I do not do this very often.

Yes, hopefully it comes. I would be extremely happy then.

in the print module, on the right hand side menu, at the bottom is a profile box, click other, select the icc profile, then print and go as you normally do
