If I want to crop specific sized areas from images, is there a way that I can bring up a crop tool box of exactly that size (in pixels), then move it around to select the actual crop?

I can feed in the pixel dimensions into the boxes at the top of the screen, but this just seems to give me a box of the correct ratio, with no actual size until I select the crop and then it resizes it to the dimensions I want. I don't want to resize it, just crop at actual size to the specific pixel dimensions.

I've tried holding down alt, space etc in the hope that would stop the box at the actual pixel dimensions but nothing seems to.

So far, the only solution that has come to mind is to open a new canvas at the required size, drag the image over to it and move the image to select the bit I want. Then simply flatten layers to fix it. This is a much longer way round than simply pulling out a crop box of the correct size.

Any suggestions anyone ?

If I understand correctly, you want to crop without resizing.

The best way is just to "clear" your crop settings, then simply draw a crop marquee while watching the info palette. Once your crop marquee is drawn to the desired size, just move it around to the correct position, then press return/enter to crop.

(Ensure your Info palette has the correct units by right/cmd-clicking on your rulers and choosing the units beforehand)

1) Select the marquee tool
2) On the toolbar select STYLE -> Fixed Size
3) Put in your Width and Height (ie: 200 px, 400 px)
4) Click on the photo
5) Select IMAGE and CROP

Cheers.

Many thanks for all your help chaps, all very much appreciated.

Thanks Chuck, that's exactly what I wanted. I knew it was in there somewhere but damned if I could find it. Appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
