A couple images from a truck crash just south of Wash DC. Traffic is bad enough around here but when things like this happens it is really bad. Not sure what caused the driver to loose control but before he went over the guardrale he hit the car that is all burned up.

The passengers of the car are OK but the truck driver did not survive.

Are your truck drivers a bit like ours? Over-tired, Drive right up each others back side, constantly enter the emergency lane always using a mobile phone, watching telly or reading something, usually doing no 1 at the same time  and show little regard for other road users....
I remember seeing one truck driver on telly going mad when a car cut in 'too' close to him on the motorway whilst trying to exit... aparently he would not be able to stop in an emergency... the car was a good 30 yards in front! I immediately thought well if you lot actually left a reasonable gap in front (i.e. more than 5 yards) then car drivers might generally get off the motorway without feeling threatened
I was also almost written off recently by a truck driver, who was soo close to me he could neither see the fact I was indicating right to get in a slower moving lane than us (I had no choice as the lanes were being split before exit) or could see I was braking. What a f*cking Rss he nearly wiped out our car and my 3 year old was in the back too....
I have little sympathy when I see truck drivers end up like this, sorry.

Ohh, I'm sure he was an evil evil man and deserved to die. His family porbably expected this to happen to him too, because all truck drivers are evilvmad. There's no way that he could be just a normal "nice" guy trying to earn a dollar to get on in life is there?

In the US truck drivers are the best drivers on the road the vast majority of the time.
The bad apples usually don't last long and a lot of the times its other truckers who see too it they get taken off the road.
My cousin has several million miles and 0 accidents over 15 years.

Now when they start letting the foreign drivers on US roads then watch out!!!

bottom line is I'd rather share a road with 1000 trucks than 10 soccer moms!

prayers are outgoing for the truckers family.

As a longshoreman I see and deal with truckdrivers everyday and as a general rule they are a good bunch of guys just trying to make a living but as with any industry you are going to find a small handful that give the whole lot a bad reputation. That being said my heart and prayers go out to the family of the driver in this crash and not to take away or make light of the tragady, but did anybody else notice the waste of all that BEER! sorry if I have upset some people, but it would appear to be quite different in the UK, from my experience at least. (I will just add I use to average about 60k miles a year which is about 5x average) The thing that really gets me is how close they drive, especially during roadworks when speed restrictions apply, which happen to be 6 or so mph lower than their restricted maximum. After that truck driver nearly wiped my me and my family out thru shear stupidity (Oh and he was not foreign) it is perhaps all to easy to see how these accidents can easily happen.

Shame that the driver was killed, looks like the people in the car got very lucky.

Around the DC area we have lots of folks that are not completly concentrating on the driving part and cause problems on the road. I have no idea what caused this accident but nobody wants to have any accident end in a fatility.

On the same day a small truck got into it with someone on the road and had a bad case of road rage. He got in front of the couple in the car and slammed on his breaks. The car went off the road and both were ejected and killed. The guy in the truck kept going and now a lot of people are looking for him.

olly_k, your own experience has obviously colored your opinion, but UK truckers are trying to make a living in a high pressure environment where everthing is stacked against them. I'm not trying to excuse the one guy who upset you, but please don't tar all truckers with the same brush.

I could discuss trucks v. cars for hours, but that's not going to help. My sympathies for the truckers family.

We don't know what caused the crash. Maybe he had health issues that caused him to lose control. That truck stop food will kill you!
