A drone fly is a hoverfly- they have aquatic larvae (whip tail maggots) so no it's a type of fly sometimes mistaken for a hoverfly.

I have never heard 'whip tailed maggot' before. I always called tehm Long tailed maggot...

Anyway, my guess is a lacewing?

Sorry I wasn't ignoring your question jus overcome at the shock of a correct ID ;) :lol:
I was looking at a shot of ' oxycera rara ' earlier yesterday & thought it was rather Hoverflyish looking, put two & two together Googled Soldier Fly Larvae & found a shot very similar, Devon Logic :lol: :lol:
