I was out photographing last night and for some reason the exposure icon in the top left of my screen was gone. Normally, when I focus a photo, I get the icon in the top left that shows if i'm over or underexposed (-2, -1/3, 0, +2/3, etc).

Does anyone know how to get this back?? I was shooting in P, Tv, and Av last night. This isn't only something that appears in M is it?

According to the user maual: Exposure compensation is basically available in all modes except in Auto. Also in Color Accent and Color Swap it's not available.

I'm not missing exposure compensation. That option is still there. I'm only missing the exposure indicator that usually would show in the top left corner of the screen when I focus an image.

This was totally understood. I was referring to the part in your post:

I was thinking abaut the (certainly small) possibility, that the cam could still be in a setting that has no EC, thus no icon.

Nevertheless, hopefully you'll get that solved! Otherwise it's a bit nasty ... :)

It's an aid to adjusting the shutter and aperture when in M mode, or to show EC that you've set if you're in an auto mode. If you're in Auto and with no EC, it won't show.

This only shows in M mode.

That may be on the S2 (?) however, it's not quite correct for the S3IS: I just tested it on my S3 - the icon in the upper left corner is shown in every mode that allows Exposure Compensation - if you've set an EC. It stays even there if you turn the cam off and on again.

What about after you press the shutter halfway? On the S2, the EC value, if set, for P, Av, Tv modes will go away once the shutter is half pressed.
In M mode, the value only shows once the shutter is pressed. ;)

Same on the S3.In M mode however, it is "only* shown with halfway pressed shutter. The display goes from -2 to +2, at which points the color changes from white to red. Probably the same on the S2 too?

ok, so we've determined that it only shows in M once the shutter button is half pressed (which I get on my camera), and then only if I've set some value for the EC in the Av, Tv, and P modes?

I guess my camera is working fine then. Bizarre. I could've sworn that I had it there before when I'd half press the shutter button in Av, Tv, or P also. Thanks for the clarification.

It'll only show in M if you've half-pressed the shutter button. EC in the auto modes has nothing to do with it appearing in M. It is, however, the same set of icons/symbols used to display EC when you're in one of the Auto modes. In the auto modes you won't see it unless you've set an EC value.
