Today I went to a local park, as I couldn't make a longer trip. Man did I make the right choice! I went to check a nest that last year was occupied by a Red-tailed Hawk. Much to my surprise, a Great-horned Owl took it over. I was thrilled as I've never seen an owl in this park even though it seems like a great area for them as it's huge. The nest was along a power line clearing and the path takes you close to the nest and an unobstructed view. Of course I took a few shots and got out of there. It didn't seem very concerned and merely watched as I slowly walked away. There is nothing quite as thrilling and eerie as seeing an owl watch you. With every step, their head moves and there is something so primal and yes, wise about them. I like the way the first shot turned out, as it seems mysterious with the one eye peeking out.

If that wasn't enough, walking through the woods I see a large shape out of the corner of my eye. A Great-horned Owl! During daylight hours? I figured it had to be the same bird, about 1/4 mile if that from the nest. But what was it doing over here? I saw it fly and then lost it. I circled around and saw a big stick nest...with two babies in it! TWO nests! So I saw 4 GHOs today. Doesn't get much better than this! Sometimes the most interesting sightings are in your own backyard..or close to it!

While not the best shot, I think this is funny. It looks like the one owl is whispering to the other!

Will you please stop hoarding all the owls down there! ;) I walk around and see owls all over the place. Then they turn out to be burls on trees, branches, etc. :o And the big nests... well they're squirrels! Ok, rant over. I'm better now!

I think the images look really good. I like the expression on the first owl's face. He's peeking out between the branches and he doesn't look happy. And the little 'uns are real cute. The whispering shot is great. Well done. And you didn't even have to leave home.

Thanks to the few who commented. EdV: Man, I've just been lucky lately. I can't tell you how many times I've looked in seemingly perfect habitat without even a sign of an owl. I was excited when someone showed me a spot where there were saw-whet owl pellets (still haven't seen one in the wild), and I was happy when I found a Great-horned Owl feather in another perfect yet owlless spot. During the nesting season, they are fairly conspicuous in the leafless deciduous woods, otherwise, very tough to locate unless you go out at night and listen.

Nice owl pictures. Local paper had GHO pic on front page. It even said where it was. In a pine tree 35 feet up. Not much of a chance to see it. Will go back in better light. Hope I can get a picture as nice as these.

Great shots!! Great Horned Owls do not make their own nests, they take over nest, usually old Hawk's nests! So it's a good thing to look where Hawks were last year! The owlets look about the same age as the owlets on my property. I read that when the juvenile owls start fledging, their survival rate is only 50%:(

Excellent series. Owls are very rare in Iceland so I know exactly how you felt when you found these. Very well done indeed. :-)

Best regards
