Phil, I could have sworn that in the Beta version you could simply right-click and rename an image (as you would in Explorer) but I've just looked again and you're correct, it's not that easy.

You can right-click and select "show in explorer", but renaming from there then causes issues in Lightroom.

(Something else for the wish-list!)

yes I discovered this......if you show in explorer and rename, LR then shows (?) on the thumb because its lost the path. Right clicking gives an option to browse to find the image, so clicking on it updates the file with the new name. A workaround, but still laborious.

Hi,

Recently started LR myself.

First thoughts: Wow. Processed 50 images in about 10 minutes on my first play with it. Compared to CS2, I've saved myself a good hour!!
Adobe: My girlfriend thanks you!

A Q for anyone who's a little more experienced:

When creating a folder structure in LR, does that work directly from the folder structure I'm using in Explorer. For example, If I start with a folder named '2007' and that has sub-folders named for months 'January', 'febuary' etc... and then sub-folders by day.... Does LR use that structure too when you import images to LR?

And, when creating a collection, for example I want to keep all my bird, animal, lizard etc... pictures together in one easily accessed group, do the pictures move, or does LR just create 'pointers' to that image? \so, any new bird pictures can be 'flagged' to be added to my bird collection easily, without moving the image from its 'actual' location inside, for example: 2007>Febuary>16?

And, a final one, thanks for your patience!! When I import new pictures just taken freom my camera, if I use the LR camera importer (forhot the actual name of it!) can I set it up to automatically create and place the pictures into the correct folder, following my folder structure (detailed above)?

Thanks fellas

Sando be careful with this....yes it will keep your folder structure if you select import from original location. When you want to select a folder, highlight it (if using PC and windows if you have your folder options set to highlight when you point at a file or folder) once highlighted click Choose Selected. The folder, images and sub folders will then be brought it. If you have multiple copies of images deselect ignore suspected duplicates or they will be ignored.

If you just choose open images when you select them, sub folders are ignored.

Creates pointer for collections and doesnt move anything.

Images are imported into a specif folder I think, where you then drag to wherever you want them.

Check the auto import function. Basically you set the folder you specify to be watched by LR. Then any new images put in there are auto imported into LR into a folder you specify, again to grag to their final resting place within LR. The folder to watch needs to be empty the first time you set it up.

Thanks fellas

Sando, not sure it will completely answer your questions, but I posted this a while back, which covers some issues I had with Lghtrooms folder handling....

I have a question: Why does Lightroom need to make this enormous folder in My Pictures? What is that?

It's the previews that are taking up the most room. There are two types of previews - standard and 1:1. LR provides a means for deleting the 1:1 on a regular basis, as you probably won't need to access these often. You should keep the standard previews around, especially if you have images on offline drives.

TJ yes I appreciate that editing would be a headache, but these are finished images and hopefully I wont have to change them at all.

I thought about imorting and copin to new location, but it seems for what I want to do its going to be quite laborious. I think Im just gonna have to do it in explorer ( i can have two windows open and drag and drop with ease, copy paste etc) then update Lightroom.
Another thing is renaming an image, not as easy as right clicking, so again looks like this has to be done outside Lightroom, as the process to rename a single image is a pain.

In the Library mode select one photo and press F2 for renaming. Here you can select a preset or use custom text.

And as per usual theres a simple solution to the most taxing problems!

Thanks for that Mike....

Now just need to figure out how to easily have an image in different folders....and how to get rich!

Still thinking about a workaround for you. Will let you know if I come up with one. Except the getting rich part. I am keeping that to myself.;)
