Fautasi Boat

Fautasi boats are long and narrow and rowed by about 40 people. In American Samoa, they always have a big race on Flag Day (this Monday/Tuesday) and they have been out practicing. I have lots of photos of them so I decided to try a slow shutter speed and pan a little bit to get something a little more abstract. C&C welcome as well as suggestions. They are racing in two days and go past my house several hundred yards out in Pago Pago Harbour. Daughter liked this photo, wife didn't.

I'm going to tend to agree with your wife, moreso than your daughter. I do see the boat, and the people on it, but they are too blurred, as is the rest of the image. I know it's probably a slow shutter effect, but without being able to distinguish anything off hand, had you not told the viewer that it was a boat, I think I might have had to figure it out. Not such a bad thing, but also, one needs to keep interest in the photo...which is where some may lose it.

I think you're idea is nice...just that there needs to be something more 'visible...i.e. the oars, the men, or the boat.

yeah, I was trying to pan to get the boat in focus but I just couldn't get it. I have done it ok with faster moving objects but not with slower moving things. Guess I will keep trying.
