Looks fast enough. You might consider doubling the memory. That will speed your machine more than any other single thing.

That gig is x2.

And most of those are probably driver issues, which are the manufacturer's responsibility to make, not Microsofts. A computer that is bought as one piece from a company that has Vista installed will work with Vista. There's no reason why they should sell a computer with an OS that's not compatible. Every one would return their machines and the companies would not profit.

The mobo above is overkil for a photography setup. Only a gamer would need this extreme of a setup. The dual SLI ready video slots on the mobo double the price without any use to anyone other than a gamer. As stated before, the power supply will not push this pc.

I didn't include a graphics card because I didn't know if you were using 2 monitors or 1, and if your monitors used DVI or VGA connecors.

I ONLY buy from the DELL Refurb/Scratch and dent area:
http://outlet.us.dell.com …rch?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb (external link)
There ARE still affordable desktops with XP Pro and XP home and XP Media Center on them avaliable as of now.

My awesome PC here:
https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=2327746&postcount=48
was less than 800 through the scratch and dent. I'm not concerned about a scratch on the case.

You can get a refund from Dell for windows. It sounds like a PITA but I would try if it was me. The idea that you are forced to buy only one OS with no alternative is BS and should be against the law. I can understand them not wanting to support it, fine. But give me the option to have no OS pre-loaded and refund the difference. This guy got a $50 refund.

Newegg has the Wintec 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 667 SDRAM Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory for $95 w/ free shipping. Tax in CA, NJ, PR, TN.

Alternatively Frys has 2GB (2 x 1GB) Patriot DDR2 667 dual channel desktop memory kit for the same price with free shipping back in stock for $95 if you prefer Patriot brand.

I called Dell today just to see if it was possible to get Windows XP. Her haughty reply was that it was not possible and I didn't have any choice because all new computers now had Vista. I said "Yes, I do have a choice. I can build my own".

I just hate it that the choice in a new computer has been taken away from us.

Misocrsoft has started to shift ALL OEM partners to vista. I believe the drop dead deadline is mid summer when all machines must ship with Vista. XP is being end of lifed rather quickly it seems.

The problems with it destroying photos from Nikon as well as Canon is not a driver issue. That is probably the most relavent problem for photographers.

Thanks guys. I did look at the Dell's and can get what I want there at a decent price with 6% discount thru work but I don't want Vista. I went thru their configure and it doesn't offer me the option of Windows XP. I repeat " I am scared sh**less of Vista.

Apple is not entirely out of the question.

Apparently Dell have changed their stance a bit.
