Is it feasable to entertain the the notion of using a 1D mark IIN as a replacement to my 30D for landscapes and Wildlife shots ?

I really want the 1D MIIn for Wildlife and a 5D for landscapes but for some reason I just cant justify it?

Alternativley I'd like to use a 5D for lanscapes and a 30D for wildlife - does this make any sense???

Gripes on keeping the 30D as an action camera:
AF is not as good as that on a 1D
FPS is slighlty slower, Do I really need 8fps vs 5fps (30D)

So to summarise this confusing mess:
1D MarkII N (Landscapes + Wildlife) or 30D + 5D (Wildlife + Landscpes)

Sure any 1 camera you have listed can do both wildlife and landscapes. 2 bodies is always nice though in some cases. Either the 30d/5d combo or 1d/5d combo is great. The 1d is a superb wildlife cam and can be used for landscape with the 16-35 or 17-40 lens.

It could be posible that the 1dmk3 will cater for ALL shooting type's- with it's low noise i think it could well match the 5d for IQ and would cost less than a 1dmk2 and 5d.

I'll be adding a mkIII to my 5D here, so I'd say if you've got the cash, sell the 30D and get a 5D/1DmkII combo.

The autofocus on the 30D is poor compared to the 5D, I would choose the 5D over it for wildlife even though the 30D has a 1.6crop. Just buy better glass :p

the 1DMKIIN is more than adequate for both, in fact it's the preferred camera for wildlife due to the terrific AF. The 5D is great for landscapes, but I've taken just my 1DMKIIN out for a combination of wildlife and landscapes and not regretted it at all.

the 1DmkIIN is definitly a great camera, more than adequate for both. with prices plummeting fast you might be able to pick up a 5D and a MKII for not too much.

two cameras sure is fun.

why not a 5d and a 1d? :) the best of both worlds!

that aside, the 1d is certainly capable of everything.

I shooted Landscape with 350D and 30D and 5D and 1Dsmk2 and 1Dmk2N and i never regret any shot from all.
Wildlife? well, i will choose 1Dmk2N or 30D for that but my 1Dmk2N is a camera for all kind of sports due to it is fast speed and its IQ which is between FF and APS-C, so it is an amazing great camera no doubt.

If you have to ask, get the 30D. If you needed a 1D or 5D you would know why and would not have to ask. The 30D is more than adequate for the vast majority of DSLR users.

If you want to do wildlife you will soon tire of portraits and want some action shots, that is when you will realize that anything short of the Mark II's 8 frames a second is simply too slow. I shoot with the MkII and I love it.

Rob.

A mII and 5D used is very close to the same price...

Any who, I just sold my 1DmII and I am in the process of getting a 5D, 1D, and XTi. The 1DmII was overkill for 90% of what I shoot and that 10% of the time a 1D will be more than enough.

Ask yourself how often you've used the 5fps on your 30D. And when you did use it, how many of the frames did you actually use, or were you hoping to get one good one? Also how often has you AF let you down, and why? Low light issue, or fast movement issue? The 5D has excellent low light AF, and it's tracking is supposedly as good as a 1DsmII, just tuned for 3fps... But if you need 8+fps and AF to track things moving fast, you "NEED" a 1 series.

I didn't, so I sold mine and I'm switching it up. But I shoot 90% landscape/travel type stuff where the 5D is a better match than the 1DmII was.

Ben

i was battling with this decision in the past few weeks and I here is what happened. I was originally going to keep my 30D and get a used 1DMk2 so I had two bodies (less lens switching would be extremely useful I figured). The day after I received my 1Dmk2 I shot a wedding and ended up using way more of the shots I took with the 1Dmk2. The noise is better, the wide-angle is far more useable and the AF is amazing compared to the 30D. I have decided to sell the 30D and stick with one body for now...hopefully one day I will be able to pair a 5D alongside the 1D body, but I need to wait a while....

When it comes to landscape and wildlife photography, I am of the opinion that a 1D is far better suited to deal with the exposure to the elements (that being weathersealing and sturdiness). Hopefully this info will help you
