I am wondering if I play to much with my photos. So I was wondering what others do. I am using DPP. Thanks if you can help me.

If you're shooting in RAW, you can never "play too much" in DPP, cuz you can always revert back to shot settings.....

I use DPP quite a bit. I start by erasing anything that is absolutely not worth keeping. Then I look at one photo at a time and adjust the settings until I am happy. This includes trying the different picture styles to see which I like best. As my photography has improved, I find I have to do less. I usually sharpen unless I need to use noise ninja. I have downloaded the newest version of DPP with noise reduction built in but haven't really experimented much with it. Lately, I have been adding +1/3 EC to avoid noise in high ISO situations more if the subject is backlit. I find that to really help. I will then decide if I need to crop and how much. From there I decide what I want to batch to a web subdirectory and to a tiff subdirectory.

Here's what I usually do:

  • Start with the RAW image adjustment.
  • Click white balance (or select from drop-down)
  • Fine tune white balance
  • Adjust brightness
  • Adjust contrast
  • Select a picture style
  • Adjust color saturation
  • Move to the RGB image adjustment
  • Try the Auto Adjust to see if it helps or hurts.
  • Usually end up resetting and manually adjust the curve.
  • Crop
  • If the results are good, apply Check1 the image and move on.
  • When finsihed, select all Check1 images and batch process to jpeg. (1280x1024 for posting to flickr.)
I use Gimp to do any painting and Neat Image to reduce noise and/or sharpen conservatively only if nesessary.
