A salesman at my favorite camera store told me that he has personally seen pre-production units of the 40D and was told that it will be released on a Monday in late August. He said it would match the XTi's 10 megapixels and have the sensor dust removal technology. It will also supposedly be equipped with the latest processor, but only one of them (unlike the Mark III that was just released with dual processors). He also said that it would indeed be called the "40D". He's a great photographer that knows the Canon and Nikkon lines intimately, so I don't believe he is mistaken.

Well, this is the first news/rumors in a while about the 40D ...Thanks.

It´s a pity you don´t have more "info" about it, just with this is not enough to make a valoration yet ... but if you can gather more info from your trusted dealer ...... ;)

but it must have more than those .... It should have a better AF system with more & better AF points, better fps (perhaps 5 ??), at least ISO3200 and 2,5" LCD. About the sensor pixel matrix, staying at 1,6 crop and with only 10 Mp I feel it´s also not enough to be a desirable upgrade .... it must win to the 400D & 30D to be competitive. So, probably it should mean a new sensor too, with the new processor (to achieve low noise reduction & high ISO), then the 10 Mp sensor with low noise and high ISO it should be acceptable.

Unless a surprise is coming and Canon make an adaptation to fit this camera with a 10 Mp, 1,3 crop factor derivated from the one used for the 1DMkIII ( a lower version - just one/my speculation !). Then, the camera could be a crack and fill an space in between 5D and 30D-400D (assuming the camera is going to cost around $1800, something less than half the 1DMkIII) !!

Just remember that already an incremental model from the 30D has been sent back by the dealer´s opinion at the beginning of this year.

Cheers
Juan

Juan,

I'll try to pump the salesman for more information on the 40D the next time I see him. He did say more, but I didn't pay attention to all the details because I was actually more concerned with whether a 5D replacement is also coming in August. (His answer: No 5D successor in August.)

Canon had a D30 so I don't think that will be a problem

I'd like a 40D to come out so I can buy a new or ex-dem 30D more cheaply!

I am thinking about moving up from my 10D to the 30D. The main things I would like would be a larger LCD for reviewing (30D ticks that box), quicker buffer/review cycle (I think the 30D ticks that box too), a few more megapixels for printing crops (ditto) and less noise at ISO 800.

Has anyone compared the noise levels at high ISOs between the 10D and the 30D?

Thanks

Andrew

Thank you

That´s coherent also with all the info/rumors we already know about the 5D upgrade. Canon it´s not in a hurry in this area, it´s the number one in FF for the moment without any competitor, so why to stress the segment? And in the other hand, the 5D is a fantastic machine, with many pro users .... and good DR. So may be his life cycle could be extended without any problem, assuming a price drop in the near future.

The only areas where Canon need replacement are in the high pro segment (3 years in the market) and in the middle segment. The 1DMkIII is coming up, probably a 1Ds is also coming at the end of the year and also a 40D, that has been delayed. About the 5D (or 7D), next year could be the possible updates depending of the competence movements ... let´s see if Noink or somebody else (Sony ??) is capable to come up with a FF model at the end of this year at a competitive price !

Cheers

It would be logical that a 40D would (at least) match the 10mp of the 400D, plus the digi III and dust system. Doesnt make sense they'd leave a semi-pro camera with less specs than the entry level SLR's.

I need a new camera in the 2-3 months, and a 40D would be perfect....

I agree with you 100%! Plus 2 1/2" screen in the back, maybe 3, less noise at higher iso, less shutter noise, larger viewfinder, 12mp maybe, iso in the viewfinder, etc.

You don't need a pencil sharpener on a digital camera.

Sorry.. you're right. I was being a bit stupid there.... trying to make a joke:( :(
I'll take the pencil sharpner out of my list and add a capuchino maker.

Pop up umbrella, coke dispenser, capuchino maker, MP3 player and bottle opener are also a MUST!!!!

Imo those upgrades would put it a bit close to the 5d. If it's not full frame surely having that many pixels would degrade iso performance? I think 10mp, 2.5/3" screen, dust features, digic 3, iso in vf. I would love to see 6fps, 12mp etc, just to trump the d200 but i can't see it really.
