lets put it this way, what ever canon comes out with, it will have to be a Nikon D200 killer. that's a nice camera with nice features. sure it might have higher noise than the 30D, but that's not the end all and be all of the camera.

I just spoke to a guy who's inlaw is on the board of directors n Canon UK. He said that he normaly gets to hear very early when a new model is coming out. He's heard nothing about a 40D or any new model, apart from the 1DmkIII that is now on preorder.

It's the same person who a couple of weeks ago said that unless a 20D or 30D owner plan to upgrade to a 5D or higher - wait 18 months.

Even if the succesor did come out, I don't like the name 40D! too familiar with 400D.

WHY the hell is it called 40D anyway? 4D plz!

It won't be a 4 period, 4 is a bad luck number in Japan, similiar to 13 in the west. that is why they went from an S3 to S5

And they had a d30 and 30d, so they are obviously not that worried about similar numbers.

40D is simply a logical name that people are using, as it is sequential with 20D and 30D, there is no official name for any 30D replacement yet.

40D would be the obvious choice though, yes it is similar to 400D, but 30D is equally similar to 300D and that never bothered anyone. It would never be called a 4D as that would logically place it in a much higher place in the range (between the 5D and 1D) and so no longer a replacement for the 30D.

Besides, what's in a name. I can't see why you are getting upset about it, particularly as no-one knows what they are thinking of calling it yet. Personally, I don't care about the name. I am only concerned with how well a camera does the job. If Canon brought out a camera that had just the specification I wanted, but named it the P 155 or the 5 HIT, I would still buy it. The name badge is the least important part of the whole camera.

Can anyone actually see image quality improving in the 40d? if so on what grounds? other than the fact that its an upgrade

It will have the latest technology, such as the new DIGIC III processor, that will improve IQ, so long as they don't compromise the improvement by shoving too many pixels onto the sensor, to appeal to those who judge a cameras abilities by Mpixels rather than results.

Why would a processor affect IQ? As far as I know, its the sensor that matters? maybe im wrong
