I am setting up a couple of cameras for an upcoming shoot and noticed that one of my 580EX flashes has the LED red, and the other green. I looked through the manual and couldn't find anything to indicate why they are different. I have double checked my settings and they are all the same. Anyone know why the colors are different? I'm sure its something silly.

From memory when you start the flash up and it's green then it's ready but only ready to fire on 2 cylinders so to speak (short distances) . When red it's ready to fire on all cylinders so to speak full distance coverage. If it stays green I think the batteries might need charging.

If I've got it wrong, someone please correct me.

Thats correct. It is green while the capicitor fills up. It turns red when the capicitor is full and you could take a full power shot. If you shoot while its green depending where it is in the cycle, it will either flash at a much lower light level or not flash at all. If you didn't know this, which I didn't at first. If you push in the red/green light, it is a test fire button. It is a little hard to push, but it works. I was wondering why i couldn't find one.

You'd think the button would light-up green when up to full power...confused the heck out of me the first time I used the 580EX.

With that said I have the 580EX and it's awesome!

Thanks guys.... I'll recharge the batteries and see if they both go green. To make this more complicated, I'm using Quantum packs and have the 580EX'a CF7 set to recycle from external source only, so the red or green is kind of irrelevant I would think. You'd think they would flip it to red all the time if shooting this way. The recycle time with the Quantum pack is nearly instantaneous, so I assume its not a problem with the 580EX showing just green.

Hmmm.. Usually it shows green if the batteries are really low. If I have freshly charged batteries, it almost never shows green. The Duracell nmih batteries are awesome. They recharge the flash so quick. Quick enough where I can't seem to take photos fast enough to have to wait in the flash.
