As far as bags go, do you have the Nature Trekker AW? I wouldn't hesitate to use one of those in the rain, so long as it's not a torrential downpour.

yea i have the nature trekker, and im not the least bit worried about its rainworthyness. im more worried about touring in small inflatables and salt water and the like. the trekker is a great back, but the dryzone might be more fitting.

Dryzone bags are heave and clumsy and don't pack well. I think the one you have is fine but if your bag goes overboard don't blame me

I know you are focusing (no pun intended) more on photography equipment, but you will definitely want to bring rain gear for you and your equipment.

Also, you might want to consider this. The best light to shoot may be at 11:00 PM to midnight and again at 4:30 AM, so bring some No-Doz or sleep during mid-day a little if you can.

Enjoy it. I've been there (3) times but never on a cruise.

Just a note... Sitka doesn't have a cruise ship dock. All passengers get to shore via the ships lightering boats. Might want a good water-resistant bag for that excursion.

Sorry about the lack of the dock, but we like it that way. ;)

It does give the cruise ship passengers a good chance to take pictures of their actual ship, on the water, and not jammed up next to a dock.

Thanks. Rain gear is definitly a given, and ill have plenty of it on my person. im also going to order some kata rain covers for my gear, ive been meaning to get them for sports anyway so itll work well. Interesting point on the lighting.

okay so... im thinking im gonna get the 10-22 instead. reasons being. A) the 10-22 on my 20D is about the same as the 12-24 on the 1D. B.) ill probably want the tele on the 1D anyway for better focusing. and C.) i read that using the filter system on the front of the sigma results in vingetting until at LEAST 14mm (and that was on a rebel), so it sounds like i might as well be using my 17-40 if im going to get it, the 10-22 on the other hand takes the adapters and everything just fine.

My experience in Alaska was that maountains and glaciers were so far away you needed more tele than wide. I'll PM you a link to a few pics from my Alaska cruise and you can look at exif.
