Interesting shot. Hope you aren't affected! Are those eggs being laid? Cheers.

It is not recommended to use surgical sprit, vaseline or any other substance to remove the ticks as you make it worse as dong it that way they die slowly and they regurgitate their stomach which can put the nasties back into whoever they are feeding off. The recommended way to remove them is to use tweesers and grab the tick and twist as you pull out and should get all of it, the lance they have has barbs.

That was the way the vets told us to do it a few years ago now. We don't seem to get the problems these days due to the frontline treatment. Thanks for the advice though.

wouldnt you normally wait to see if you developed the symptoms of Lyme disease and then treat with antibiotics if necessary? I know its quite a hard disease to diagnose but its also pretty rare. There's a lot of worry about antibiotics being prescribed too readily and then becoming less effective. Just suprised but obviously not being a doctor I have to bow to your GP's advice.

I think that was the advice given a while ago but appears to now have changed. Link here shows how to remove the tick http://www.tickpreventionweek.org/remove/ (external link)

The GP referred to a macro bioligist at a hospital that has more knowledge of the problem and it was on their advice that we should be treated. I think it is beacause 3 of us have contacted the ticks and the duration we had them. There is a possibility that one or two might have been on us for at least 24 hrs. One of the bites I had where the Tick was likely to have been on for at least 12hrs started to go a bluish red which caused concern. My son had removed a tick on his own, it looks like he did fine but you can't be sure. Each of us was bitten 3 - 4 times over the course of a week as opposed to once. I guess all contributed to being cautious rather than wait and see.
