I've noticed on the bird site that the shots have a blurred background, less distracting that the ones I've taken. I guess I need to lower my aperature to 2.7 rather than take them at 4.5 or higher. I guess best results are also with the manual focus. I'm using the Canon S 2IS. Any comment or experiences?

I don't think you can blur the background on that camera (DON'T OWN ONE)

You need a large fast lense which has a certain distance from the sensor.

Those point and shoot may say f/2.7 but you might have to convert that by multipliyng it by 10X (i think lol) just like it says 7mm when actually it more like 28-50mm

I never looked into those Point and shoot cameras so I could be a bit off, anyone gonna correct me here.

Point and shoot cameras have allot of depth making what you are trying to do difficult. But you should still be able to do this. You are going to have to zoom in all the way though (most telephoto). The canon G2 I have can make nice blurry backgrounds as long as it is zoomed in as much as possible and there is a reasonable amount of distance between subject and background.

Keep trying but I doubt that little P&S will get you much in "auto". the EVF will betray you anyway.

I am giving my S2is to my Grandson as a starter camera.

There is a lot that comes into play with DOF. The size of the aperture, the size of the sensor, the focal length, distance to subject, etc. Check out this DOF calculator (external link) (your camera is in it) and it will show you what you need to do to get that out of focus look beyond your point of focus.
