Brandon, Keith's orignal post, which last was updated a few days ago and many pages back, specified it was the Kenko PRO300DG 1.4 TC. It was that post that led me to pick up that particular TC. This appears to be Kenko's top 1.4 TC, and is $100 less than Canon's. We'll see if I can produce the same level of sharpness with the 100-400L IS and TC as Keith has. If so, totally cool. If not, it'll make a great companion to the super tele primes. :D

Excellent shots, very sharp with fabulous colours! I especially love pics#1 and #4 - Beautiful! Thanks for sharing the Bearded Tit, another photographer posted one on Fred Miranda but failed to identify the bird and now I know what it is.:)

Thanks all.

The ringed plover is my favourite too.

The bearded tit is a pretty scarce bird in the UK - about 400 breeding pairs - and is restricted to a few locations, most notably East Anglia (I took this in North Norfolk).

It has another name - "bearded reedling" - which reflects its preferred habitat and the fact that it isn't actually a tit (chickadee) but the only European representative of the babbler family.

Brandon,

here's my earlier thread: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=302252

Outstanding shots. Really love the low angle in the first one. :-)

Best regards

These are fantastic shots Keith. I tried my 100-400mm with a 1.4 tc for my first bird shots and was very, very impressed. I had only previously used the set up for motorsports. :-)

Well done Keith. That combo of lens and TC works well for you.

Thanks again, all.

I'll be honest and say that due to how I use the kit I probably don't get the best out it.

I wish I was in a situation where I could hunker down, get comfortable and prepared, and wait for birds to present themselves to me in good light, on good perches with nice clear backgrounds.

The reality is that I live in an industrialised area of England with precious little in the the way of decent bird photograph opportunities. I'm on the move all the time just to find birds to photograph, and most of my opportunities are "snatched", which doesn't really lend itself to brilliant pictures.

Even with my wader/shorebird shots, the beaches here are always busy with the Great Unwashed and people emptying their dogs - I've had rocks thrown at me when I've been sitting waiting for turnstones to get a bit closer!

Not ideal photographic situations, as I say.

Jason,

my BT pictures were taken up the road from you at Pensthorpe Wildfowl Park.

I'm not normally one for shooting captive birds, but they have a couple of large free-flying aviaries, one of which contains a family of bearded tits - they're hard to resist, given that the "reedbed" they live in is about 15 feet past the entrance to their aviary - and you'll be all but stepping over avocet, ruff and redshank to get to them!

;)
