My 50L just came yesterday and I've been experimenting with it around the house to get a feel for its idiosyncrasies.

Here's the obligatory self-portrait in the mirror shot ...

Nice set Tom. Though I probably would have opted to clone out the OOF area in this photo. At first glance, one might mistaken it for sensor dust. (Or at least I did.) But it's probably birds in the background but they're so blurry, they no longer look like birds and become distractions.

Thanks for the feedback Julian. Very valid point you have there.

Just remember the focus shift. On my copy it occurs mainly between f/1.8 and f/2.8.

So how exactly do you deal with this focus shift? Is this lens that unreliable at varying distances from the subject? That really would make me not trust the lens with anything important. I really could use this focal length but the options do not seem that appealing.

There are many workarounds that have been discussed here and on places around the web. In my case I either shoot wide open or stopped down at f/2.8. If you do need to shoot at apertures prone to the shift use servo and shoot multiple shots. I really like this lens wide open so that's where I shoot most of the time.

Thanks. I have read quite a bit about it prior to making the decision to order the 50L. I've been playing around with it get a good sense of its nature.

It certainly isn't easy to use, but it does have a unique character about it.

the shift drives me crazy at times.

I've been debating selling mine and going with something else for a change lately.

what seems to be the average price for these nowadays? mine was purchased this past February, so it still has 8 months of warranty left. new it looks like $1,600...I wonder if $1,400 would be enticing :p

Here are some more I took yesterday at dinner. Still learning the 50L.
