No even if you focus manually it will still shift. It has to do with the plane of focus changing as the aperture is closed down ( as far as I understand it, I could be wrong. )

The very early copies I think were much worse, I've had a 2007, a 2008, and now a 2010 and my latest is definitely easier to manage. I don't even think about it really. It's just a great lens.

An excellent example of why the 50L is an awesome lens :)

Well done Will!

Without trying to offend anyone, is it me or the f/1.4 is sharper?
I know that this lens is not just about sharpness, but is this real...

Looks like backfocus on the 50L pic? Check the letters on the side of the bag!

Yep, focus is different on both images.

Only way to do this type of test properly would be to use LiveView on a tripod, zoomed in at 10x.

nice spot!... though if water were actually IN the reflecting pool, that may have been even more nice... I was there this past week-end myself!

Yeah, I rode past the Non-Reflecting Pit the other day on my bike haha Did you get some good shots in DC otherwise?

It's our yearly boating 4th of July spot, but using a tripod is out of the question due to boat rocking; other than that, it's a fantastic view!

Fantastic! More more!

Happy to oblige :) I like how this shot looks, but if you pixel peep you can see that the Lincoln Memorial is not in focus.. oh well, you can't win them all, especially from a rocking boat:

This is from last year, though NOT from my 50L (didn't own it then haha). It's from my trusty 24-105:

yep, the 50 L had a backfocus issue. I posted it around to see if anyone else was having the problem. Subsequently got a camera with micro adjustment, but now I don't have the 50 1.4 anymore.

But actually they were on a tripod, and focus was on the same spot...just results were troubling since it the the FIRST shot with my 50 L when I got it home. Both were focused using LiveView and 10x... I tried it manual focus and autofocus. I also tried it manual one/ auto other....etc. in the end the results were always the same.

I'd love to have that 50 1.4 back to test it now after MA... but, it hasn't really concerned me much since MA... the friend i sold the 1.4 to I see a couple times per week. So, if someone really needs it, I'll be glad to re-shoot it.

(But in the end, my results might not mirror yours since you won't have the actual lenses I have :)

Ok, so the 50L here has back focus issue, but from your real world usage, do you feel it's sharper tha f/1.4? I want to know if this lens will work with me. Thanks
