Ok, so the 50L here has back focus issue, but from your real world usage, do you feel it's sharper tha f/1.4? I want to know if this lens will work with me. Thanks

Yep, its tough to say, because after about 2.8 the 1.4 is just sharper in the center, but I sold it within a few days of the 1.2, so can really say for sure. My 50 had a BF issue, but it was rather easily adjusted w/ Micro Adjustments... but I still find it soft even when dead on. Yours may not have that problem. But thats focus tests and whatnot.

In practical usage, I love the results and cant complain.

Ok, thanks Mike and Phillip, and the other's too. I think I'll try one and see if it justify the cost.
But the picture in this thread is damn good, I'll see if that can makes up my mind.

it's a lens you have to have patience with to get the hang of...and in some cases, it may need calibration from Canon right out of the box.

my copy was like that.

check out an earlier post of when I first got the 50L, it was front focusing badly. I sent it to Canon for calibration and came back much better. I'd rather send something in for repair than back to the manufacturer, where my replacement may be worse than the last.

Day 163/365

"Barry Lyndon"

In 1975 Stanley Kubrick directed "Barry Lyndon" a 18th Century Period film. The Film didn't do well in Theaters, but is widely remembered for its Cinematography... Each scene in the film glows like an 18th century painting, because its lit like the 18th century... Kubrick shot the entire film with out any artificial or electric lighting. In order to do this, he used a Leica ƒ0.7 50mm Lens, that was originally designed for the Apollo Space Program. I don't have a Leica ƒ0.7, but tonight I happen to have something close... a Canon 50mm ƒ 1.2 L my dream lens, rented from LensRentals.com, The Next few 365's will involve my testing of this lens... Tonights test was Low Light.

Strobist info:

12 Candles. 8 on Table, 2 Camera right for fill, and 2 on back table against the wall.

Camera Info:

Canon 5d Mark II w/ 50mm 1.2 L

ƒ1.2 | 1/80 | ISO1600

Imagine if you had the f/0.7. You'd be able to shoot this w/ iso 50  j/k (I don't know how the math goes after f/1.0.)

Nice image.
