I just can't stop coming back to this thread. I'm really close to selling both my zooms to pick this up. I just want to go back through every page of this thread today. Beautiful work, folks.

I use a B+W F-Pro UV filter. I keep it on at all times, unless I'm using a circular polarizer or ND filter.

since it's a 72mm filter size, you may just want to opt and get 77mm filters and use a cheap step-up ring. If you have lenses with a 77mm filter size, you can swap easily instead of buying multiple filters.

the 77mm filter size requires a step-up ring.

or you can get the whole set :-)

I leave it on at all times. the 50L like most L lenses, requires a filter to complete the weather sealing.

It's here! I think I made a mistake though...I need to start working out to haul around this bad boy. I swear it feels heavier than the 70-300L. :)

BTW, I can tell it will need a little MFA. Has anyone used the Reikan FoCal program...results?

Think my wife would be mad if I just ordered this and her new P&S? What's that about permission and forgiveness? I'm sold. I must have this lens. I don't need it, but I must have it.

Stay away from the 85L then if the 50L feels hefty. The 85L will break your arm.

I love the heft of this lens! It rounds the 5D3 out very well.

I just installed reikan focal and tested my lenses. I tried, 24L,50L, 135L, and 300L. It works great, but strangely enough, the only lens it can't reliably calibrate is the 50L. Maybe something to do with the 50L focus shift. I tried the test twice, and it says I needed -10 MA, but when I did that, and tried shooting, it is actually worse than 0 MA.So I'm leaving it at 0 for now. I'm going to try again next time.

Reikan Focal Pro worked perfectly for auto calibration of all my bodies/lenses including the 50L though you do need to set things up properly to get consistent results. Here are a few tips:

* use a quality tripod and DONT extend the legs (to reduce vibrations - the system is very sensitive to any movements which shows you how accurately it measures)
* use the modelling lamp from a strobe boomed close to directly illuminate the target - I achieved 10 EV this way and I believe the lighting consistency and brightness helped significantly (so much so I was able to use Focal in its most accurate mode ie. to maximise focus check consistency).
* Don't use a CFL as the flicker/cycling will cause inconsitent results
