Obviously the 50L's weight/size is better (lighter/smaller) and I prefer the mechanical focus system... but in terms of IQ the 85L wins out easily. Given both focal lengths work for what I do I'd let the 50 go before the 85.

i agree..the 85L is an amazing lens

I just hit a few keys on the calculator and thinking your lens lineup is smack dab within reach and would be a fantastic kit... Just not sure if letting the 24-105 go for the 16-35 would feel like a mistake. The 50 f/1.2 and the 5D3 are both on top of my list right now. I've been trying to get negotiations going with the finance department for a few weeks, but she keeps saying "I don't want to talk about this right now." Gotta make the conversation happen this week to have any hope of getting the double rebates (not that another deal won't come along shortly after this one expires...)

Anyway, congrats on the kit and enjoy!

Randy I'll reply about the kit tomorrow and thx.
Mike, lol and thx.

Question, I've seen that a few of you don't like to use a filter on this lens.
Is that the consensus here?
If I'm mistaken, what do you guys recommend for under $150?

I do think the 50L is the most attractive lens. Almost feel ridiculous to say that but it just feels perfect mounted on a 5D.

If I'm mistaken, what do you guys recommend for under $150?

I keep a B+W multicoated UV on mine. I believe it needs a filter to be fully weather sealed.

Everyone has their own opinions on Filters, I always use them, I use a Hoya MRC, my lens performs the same with or without it.
These are wide open with the filter :)

I use a B+W MRC UV filter on mine as well. Stays on at all times. As Tommy pointed out, it is required to fully weather seal the lens.
